How to check what type of hard drive you have installed on linux?

Check dmesg and look for the hard drive output. You'll usually see the size, make and model number. You could also install smartmontools and run that but using dmesg will be faster. Type dmesg or cat /var/log/dmesg at the SSH prompt.

hdparm -i /dev/sda will get you model, serial number, as well bunch of other info.
