CentOS on IBM xSeries 206

Hi guys, I've recently ported my Windows Server to another machine and I thought I might as well try to reuse its old machine to run CentOS. Below are the technical specifications: Intel P4 3.0Ghz 1Gb DDR ECC 2x320Gb in RAID 1 CentOS 5.5 Basically, I could go through the entire installation process up till the reboot (I could see the RAID volume as a single drive under the name asr_raid etc). However, upon reboot, the system boots into the famous blank screen with a blinking cursor. Trying to run a console with Ctrl + F1 does not work and pressing the power button immediately turns the machine off (sign of boot failure?) I've set the raid module to be configured as bootable in the raid controller and I've tried doing a minimal installation without any additional software. As a side note, ESXi lists the raid module as two separate drives and could only boot when I did a single drive installation (disabling raid and removing a drive) so I'm thinking it might be a faulty raid driver? But how does it explain CentOS mounting the drive as asr_raid? I'm basically out of ideas.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

double check your raid firmware drivers are up to date and i'd hit google with the raid controller + centos for any existing issues perhaps for the sake of argument (if you have time) , try an older version of centos (5.4 perhaps).

With raid 1, you'll need to set the correct drive at bootable. Just setting the raid module may not do it. Did you boot up with the IBM raid CD and check your actual settings, and which is set for boot? It sound like to me the install is working, but the disk it's installing to is not set as bootable.

agreed that it seems like the disk's not set as bootable. problem is, i lost the ibm raid disc i've downloaded "IBM ServeRAID Support CD v7.12.14" but it doesnt show the raid array.. any ibm experts?

Not sure if I qualify as an expert, but I've been running about 60 IBMs day in and out for quite a few years now.. Sounds like you have not matched up the actual controller with the software you need. Find your Raid controller, then you can match it up here: http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry...ocid=SERV-RAID

okay i got the right disc, the array shows up but there seems to be no option for setting it to be bootable. just options to synchronize/initialize.

There should be a primary drive in your Raid1, usually the one listed first. If you are not sure, there are two things you can do. Simply swap the drive positions, and accept the configuration change during the next boot up. Failing that, just re-setup and init the whole Raid 1, so you know it's done right, then re-install CentOS. If that fails, then something other than Raid issues are to blame.
