server load

Posted by Cyclon, 03-30-2005, 03:37 PM
My server load on my reseller account / cPanel at PowerVPS in Servis status page is showing Server Load 1.71 (2 cpus), and it's going to 3 or 4 wery often. When it goes over 2 the red indicator blinking beside. What is this exactly showing? Is this wery bad?

I don't think it's too bad. I'm pretty sure PowerVPS uses Dual Opteron's which can easily handle a load of 4.

But what is that load exactly showing, why is flashin red when it goes over 2?

Lev, he is on a VPS. The CPU usage that you see is quite bad. If you have root to this VPS, you may want to try to optimize a few things such as the httpd.conf settings. If you run "top" in SSH, you can see what is taking up your resources. You can try to optimize that service. I had MySQL spiking to 100% every few minutes once, I had a friend help me optimize it and now it never happens.

No, I am not on the VPS, i have a reseller account. Is it then bad? And can someone please explain to me what does that numbers of load mean? I now that load can be shown in % but I don't understand what are this numbers realy mean.

The number goes red when it goes above a set limit set by your host, for example my 1CPU servers are set to display red at 1.25 and 2CPU servers at 2.25 if you are spiking at 3-4 everyone once in a while you should still be ok, I would watch to see that you do not notice a real slowdown on your sites and just ignore the load averages unless you are seeing it stay above 3+ all the time

As his first post says, he is on a reseller account. OKIHost explained the concept well. What I disagree with is that 3 is bad, even all the time, a Dual Opteron can handle it. As OKIHost said: you should just ignore spikes unless you see the load go high or if you notice a slowdown in the performance of your website. What you are currently seeing is in no way bad from my stand point.

Do you notice this happens mostly late at night? It might be when they are doing backups and script updates as part of the nightly routine.
