Remote MySQL server, security?

Posted by MannDude, 11-02-2010, 01:05 PM
Hey there, I have a remote MySQL server setup that will be used to handle the database loads for a new service we're launching. The main server is cPanel/WHM based, with good security and optimization however the MySQL server is currently not as tweaked. I am wondering what things I should do to properly optimize this MySQL only server for performance and security.

Tweaking Mysql Server depends on the front end application that relies on it. There is no standard rule for doing that.If you can, just download and install the Mysql tuning primer script. Performance Tuning Primer Script is a shell script, written by Matthew Montgomery, which can significantly help you optimize MySQL installation. The usage is simple, the only one condition is that MySQL server must run at least 48 hours before the first run of the Performance Tuning Primer Script, to be efficient. You can download the script from the following link. ================= http://day32.com/MySQL/tuning-primer.sh =================

Thanks Tom, I'll have a look at that.

Its also a good idea to block all external IP's from accesing the mysql server other than the main server IP and your home IP.

Tom is right - really depends on the application(s) using MySQL. For what it is worth, the config variables that seem to affect performance the most (for me) are: key_buffer_size table_cache query_cache_size Your mileage may vary - hope that helps some.
