Posted by darkspace_co, 10-31-2010, 10:47 AM
Hello, I'm looking for cheap SSL certificate. I tried to google it but there is to many results. Basically it's for one domain, mainly for website but it would be nice if it will be "wild card" so I could use for sub domains or maybe also for mail server. Regards

If you are just trying to a regular https website then any cheap one will be fine, just pick the company you feel most comfortable with, they are all just about the same. Wildcard ssl's are very expensive no matter where you go. If you only need it for a few names, it is usually still cheaper to buy individual ssl's than a wildcard ssl.

For really cheap, you can use StartCom's Free SSL Certificate (http://cert.startcom.org/).

I used to pick them up via GoDaddy, they always have a coupon which makes it less than $15, just look on http://www.retailmenot.com/view/godaddy.com; there is one promo code "WOWSSL" which makes it $12.99. That said, I've gotten tired of having to constantly find coupons to make GoDaddy's costs competitive. I recently signed up for an Enom account and with my pricing tier they have SSL certificates for $9.95. The only caveat with Enom is I had to find another account to become a reseller under. In addition, for my account, I have to deposit $100 at a time to refill my balance. I believe their costs are low (for me) because they’ve eliminated end-user support, they avoid small transactions and get to sit on funds when you deposit money into your account. So far I've been very happy with the service I have received. There are a lot of people that offer an Enom reseller account. I went through the people that provide my billing software as I trust them: http://www.clientexec.com/discounts.html Regards, Jerret

What would be classified as very expensive? I know of at least one company that offers wildcard certificates from under $40(USD) per year.

Just a note about wildcard certificates because I've seen our own clients ask about this, but the wildcard is only valid for one level. For example, a wildcard certificate will work for sub.domain.com but not second.sub.domain.com ... so keep that in mind! You would have to purchase a second wildcard for it to work on second.sub.domain.com and so fourth.

As far as I know, NameCheap still give out free SSL Certs with all new domain orders.
