Sudden Bandwidth Usage
Posted by Serverji, 10-21-2010, 12:41 AM | Hi
We have a Windows 2003 Server with HELM.
6 days back the outbound traffic usage on the server spiked from 5 GB to 300 GB per day and is same since that day.
Since its a shared server how can we check which file/program/domain is stealing the bandwidth ?
Thanks

Instead, look at your iis site logs. Something on one of the sites may be hotlinked.
Then, look at the output of "netstat -an" to find unusual connections.
You may want to set bandwidth quotas and see if some certain site chokes. When the customer complains, you know which one it is.

You should either see Crawlers/Robots that are using up massive amounts of bandwith, and/or IP's. I can't say how to block user agents or ip's under windows, but i can recommend you get linux hosting.
Looking through your logs once in a while will give you an idea of what's going on, also it's probable that someone might be hotlinking, but 300 gigabytes from 5, is too much !
