Windows Server 2008 w/ IIS 7 and SQL Server

Folks, I am assisting some friends/customer with getting a Window Server going for what will be a serious extensive website. I have always been a RH/CentOS person for web hosting and managing a server. The last I messed with IIS was in college when it was just above garbage. I never realized how extensive this has all become. Anyway, what are some of the must haves when hosting a Windows Server. I already miss CSF, LogWatch, and flexibility of software options at an extremely affordable price. We have some time, but I have to find a good Host Intrusion, Virus Scanner, etc, without paying a fortune. I just need some ideas. In the case of Linux products, I found that people post their best practices and easily found on Google. For Windows, it seems that most is corporate for obvious reasons, so nobody wants to post about their best practices unless it is a book to make money. So are their any book suggestions? It seems there are too many ways to skin the cat and so you can't see what is the preferred way. Thanks! Frank

I'm in the same boat as you are. Are you using MSSQL as your DB?

Yes. Microsoft SQL Web 2008.

Any reason why you went with Web as oppose to sticking with express?

Windows 2008 firewall is acceptable as a firewall, unlike previous versions of Windows. Its not super high tech, but it does get the job done. AV is a different story. No one package seems to do it all well. I am presently using commercial AVG on all our Windows servers and it is thorough, but its performance is lacking. NOD32 was my favorite performance wise, but it had a tendency to miss some things. For diagnosis, the sysinternals tools are invaluable, especially TCPMonitor and Process explorer.

Jon, What does AVG mean by connections? I imagine I need the AVG File Server Edition. To me, connections could mean anything... number of IPs, number of user connections, etc. Thanks, Frank
