what do you look for in a reseller account?

Posted by VagrantHost, 07-10-2004, 12:55 AM
of course, i realize the sensible reasons, such as "realiable support", "excellent server speed and uptime" and "friendly company". what do you resellers look for in when choosing a plan? i'll just assume that you consider the above reasons.

Hey vagrant, this is my list for looking for resellers, in addition to your few reasons. How they deal with your questions pre sale. Do they offer a live chat on the website or via IM, are they friendly to multiple questions. How quickly are emails replied to etc. Do they provide 24 hour support via phone or similar? Do they offer unbranded hosting, to make it appear that you are the hosting company, not a reseller account. If they have forums, how are they worked. Do they leave threads there instead of deleting them to make themselves look better. Do they offer a reembersement for downtime Do they offer money back for unused months if you decide to leave. How do they deal with an exceeding of limits. Do they simply deactivate till the months end, or allow you to continue for the remainder and let you change plans either straight away, or the next month. Hope these helps AdamJ

1. Uptime. 2. Realiable. If a small company could be as realiable as a big company yet as cheap as a small company then users would come swarming in. 3. A smile. Being nice, offering a hand even when the customer doesn't ask is more important than most think. Its the small things that really count. 4. Support 5. one someone goes over the limit, give the customer a warning, and ask him to upgrade. next time u would fine. but dont fine right away and dont close the account 6. if the host goes down then there has to be some kind of exchange.

When I was selecting my account I got it down to a shortlist based on features, price and what people on here and other forums had said in the past. What tipped the balance (significantly) in favour of BlueWho (who I currently have an account with) was the open and apparently honest support forums with very quick response/solution times. BlueWho's forums are open for the masses to read at www.bluewho.com so you can see what I mean. There are no doubt a number of other hosts who offer reliable and open support like this, so there is no reason to use a host that doesn't! NOTE: I have no association with BlueWho apart from being a happy customer.

I would choose an account with a good provider in a good data center. You should also choose a provider that provides high quality tech support. Also, you should choose a host with a phone number. I know that this may sound silly but I have read posts from people who have not been able to contat their hosting provider for days because they can not be phoned. A Private IP address and a private name servers are a must.

For me uptime is extremely important, then support and speed

again... i'll just ASSUME that you consider the above reasons.

Look for proof of uptime and some positive customer reviews on WHT would be a help too. Make sure you get an idea of the support system they run and that it'll be adaquate for your needs.

AdamJ, did you find a host with all those features available?? Sounds great.. dspillettt, how long have you been with bluewho? For me, i would say uptime first (As my emails are most important), then support and speed.. Reliability is a must..

ok it seems i will try it since i am looking for a host and the one i decided on doesn't respond so far

What I looked for: 1. Realiable 2. Quick response 3. Support 4. Keep you informed Point 4 is very critical, If your host keep you in loop about what is happening, he is a good host. New start-up with good potential would be good. As you may get pretty good deals at initial stages.

harsha, you also need to be careful about new hosting business. its not uncommon for a hosting business to fail close to start...

For sure, that is why when I say New Host with good potential. Again good potential and approach to the business! Remember, somebody started their business some time as a new host.

to be honest i look for a host who provides reasonable costs and doesnt promise the world to its contituants. There is something to be said for a host who can adequately assess what their customers' need. Theres a balance of quantity vs. quality that must be struck. Dont have crappy phone support, have great email support. I also greatly appreciate hosts who understand that probably the majority of their customers want to grow into something bigger. So support that by offering midddle level upgrades for packages. A customer isnt a customer for a day. Thier a customer for a lifetime (if your good, and that provides alot more cash flow over the course of your company). So that said- limits on some things is differently a good thing.
