Window Server 2008 Backup Questions

Posted by XLT_Frank, 08-05-2010, 07:01 PM
I am new to Windows based hosting. On my CentOS machine, I generate cPanel backups and then I have my backup server rsync the files across where I have a script to manage the months, days, etc. Anyway, my buddy and I are setting up a Windows Server for a single website. I know that 2008 has that nifty backup and since this server is designed for just one website, we wont be using Enkompas. So the documentation for 2008 says that it has to backup to a separate NTFS drive. So we have planned to have another HDD installed. However we need to keep copies offsite for obvious reasons. I was hoping to just throw a 1 TB hard drive into my linux backup server and store the backups there via SFTP. Does anyone see a problem with that? I know I cannot use the Windows Backup tool to directly store to that drive. My gut tells me there is something I am not thinking of. Thanks, Frank Last edited by XLT_Frank; 08-05-2010 at 07:04 PM.

Windows 2008 Backup needs a physical drive for its fastest and smartest incremental backup (which takes minutes and backs up just changes from disks). As far as I remember, you can still use Windows 2008 backup to back up to a network share. And you should be able to set the network share on a CentOS as well.

So it looks like I would grab NTSF-3G and then use SAMBA? I know that Windows Backup will do a network share, however it won't do incremental. Is there a good and cheap Server 2008 backup utility that is cost effective?

You may want to checkout GFI Backup. You can run the GFI Backup Home installer and use GFI Backup in windows compatibility mode since GFI usually wants you to purchase the business license if the program is being used on Windows Server OS's. Their Business license used to have an attractive fixed price but since they only offer leased licenses, I dont recommend customers to buy it anymore.

Thanks for the great suggestion! That will work well. I will then just find that SQL backup script I saw recently... THanks, Frank
