Reseller provider comparison

Hi I'm looking into a reseller account to use for a start-up locally based web design and marketing business in order to host clients sites etc. I anticipate building sites that use MySQL powered PHP software such as phpBB forums and OSCommerce web stores etc. At the moment I'm looking to position the business as providing personal consulting, design and hosting service to very small businesses, so automated setup, billing and account registration is not a high priority currently but may be in the future. I expect most of my clients to be local (Hampshire in the UK) rather than trying to compete with the bigger firms over the Web, so they will probably be paying by cheque rather than over the net. I'm starting on a shoestring, and I currently have no clients so I'm after a low cost plan but which can be upgraded on demand. I am a HTML guy not a server expert, so I expect to need lots of support in the early stages especially. I expect that my clients will be even less techie than me, but that some of them will want to do their own site updates, so a simple control panel for users is probably important. I've found a couple of hosts that seem to provide what I want. Would anyone with personal experience of either care to make a comment? hostgator Seems to have an excellent package for a good price - i'd be looking at the Aluminium plan initially. The only thing is they are US based and don't allow shell access (not that I know if I'll need it). unitedhosting I have had 1 personal recommendation for this firm. Their data centre is in the US. Do allow shell access but has limits on the number of sites hosted (although I should think it will be a while before I exceed these). Looking at either the startup or professional package. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Pete

why are you limiting your options to those two only ? I think if you do a bit more homework you will find wider range of options to go through ! And a lot more companies to add to that poll above !

Both are reputable companies, have you emailed both to check out support times? Perhaps you should look at getting an account with a company who uses UK based servers, it will improve site response times for your clients. Andrew

Hahaha! I find it so funny that at this point most votes (6) are for "Neither - Go with someone else". I'd be willing to bet it must be their competitors who want of a piece of the action. Out of personal principle I did not and will not vote for one of the hosts. In any case, IMO the only ones who should vote should be customers/ex-customers of those hosts.

bet it must be their competitors who want of a piece of the action." -- Exactly. Glad we are up there, but polls on a board full of competing hosts is always going to prove useless and indicate a lack of genuine "opinion" im afraid

Of all the reviews and comments that I have read, both are pretty solid companies. So you have tough choice in front of you.
