Western Digital Green Hard Drives

Posted by peep96, 08-05-2010, 01:07 PM
Hey guys, I was looking around online for hard drives for a RAID 10 array and came across WD's Green hard drives. They are supposed to save energy by switching RPMs to a lower level when idling. I just wanted to know if it is okay to build a raid 10 array using these drives? Thanks in advance.

Don't do it.

They will fail in a week or less - almost guaranteed

If you have to, use the RE-GP drives as they are raid certified and have TLER (Time limited error recovery) so wont drop out of the raid. You are still much better off with normal drives. The energy savings in the long-run are very low.

I have three of these in a Synology DS409 RAID 5 setup. Been almost a year with no problems. I won't buy them again though.

okay, so I am better off just getting the WD 7200rpm Blue drives?

I personally would get Blacks.

What is/are the differences? I looked around and it looks like the capacity of the drives are larger, but is performance better with Blacks?

We use WD RE3 or RE4. Have a lot of those and never had problems.

they are ok if you don't need high I/O, such as serving non-busy static files. they are not good for DBs. I don't think they are good for RAID, because they require couple seconds to spin up when they are idle. however they are pretty reliable, we have been using some of them for some months, non of them fail yet. for RAID suggest you use RE3 or RE4.
