Moving domain to another server without affecting email?

I have someone hosting his domain with his ISP. Could it be possible to point his domain to my server without affecting his email at all? How would I do that? And how easy would it be?

Well the best way would be to create an A record at your current host for the new mail server,,, or simply just use the ip address and check both email accounts until you stop receiving email at the old account. that being said.. The best solution is one that you understand. Using the IP address(es) is much simpler and definitely the way to go if this A record stuff is confusing. That said, I will tell you some of the advantages and disadvantages of the A record method. Advantages 1. oldmail.domain.com is easier to read over the phone vs 192.168.123.123 2. The error message oldmail.domain.com could not be found is an error message that your customer might understand. They might not call in a panic. 3. You don't need to keep notes on your customers old email IP addresses. 4. You and the customer can tell when the propagation has reached them because oldmail.domain.com will begin to exist. Disadvantages 1. oldmail.domain.com does not exist at the old ISP and this causes more error messages. 2. You will need to go back and delete the oldmail entry some time later 3. There can be added delay of a few hours while the customers machine still believes that oldmail does not exist. 4. Your customer may need to restart their machine to get it to do a fresh lookup for oldmail I hesitate to give 1.2.3. directions because if you need them then you should be using a simpler method.
