I would like to add DNS3 and DNS4 Nameservers

to my Cpanel account so that if my VPS goes down, my clients would still be able to use their email which I have outsourced, but which I understand would not work if the DNS1 and DNS2 servers which reside on my VPS are down. Is there a place you could point me to where an amateur hoster such as myself might be able to glean enough knowledge to accomplish this? It seems to me to be a very good idea for a host like me to have this sort of backup. Thanks, Dave

You can setup cluster dns for this. In this case, you will be supplying nameservers for a domain at a registrar which will be distributed over two different servers. These nameservers will be clustered, that means one will act as a master and the other as slave. When we do the update on master, the slave will be automatically updated. Now even if any of these servers are down the websites will work, as always the other server will be up and the nameserver on that server will give the IP.

This sounds like an excellent idea. But I am at a loss as to how to begin to do it. Are you saying that I should have NameCheap host my DNS? That is where I have 99% of my domain names. Are they already redundant, or would I have to do something? Sorry to be a dunce, I am trying to learn as much as possible.

If you have spare servers, we can use Bind to install and configure a master-salve nameserver system. Again, you can also buy this kind of service from providers.

Agreed. You can use one of your extra servers for a slave.

Indeed it's a very good idea and very easy to setup with either Cpanel or DirectAdmin hosting control panels. You'd need to create your custom nameservers at your domain registrar(in this case NameCheap) and set them up with the IPs of your DNS servers.

umm, why don't you just seperate ns1 and ns2 to different servers, as they are supposed to be in the first place ? cpanel supports dns clustering, and its dead easy to set up.

Yes, this is precisely what I would like to do, I want to be correct. So, my rephrased question is "I would like to separate my DNS1 and DNS2 servers to meet correct industry standards" and if someone had a tutorial or Cpanel video on EXACTLY how to do this, that would be super. In the meantime, I will do some Googling to try and learn this. I am sure it will be easy after the first time I do it. It is only hard when I have never done something before Dave

Get another small VPS and put 'CPanel DNS only' on it. http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vie...nfigureCluster http://layer1.cpanel.net/

set up DNS clustering using cpanel - do not buy thrid pary domain dns services from your domain registar

Excellent. I now understand better. AT the Cpanel site, it says I should ideally have a total of THREE servers. I would like to only have TWO servers. My current VPS and a separate VPS that is Cpanel DNS only. Would this be OK at least for now? Thanks, Dave

For a master slave nameserver setup, we need only two servers. It will need to be configured and will not be having cpanelDNSonly.

You can run just two. It is perfectly acceptable.
