Monitoring Service from my VPS

Posted by andretenreiro, 03-26-2010, 01:18 PM
I want to monitor the uptime of one of my services. Since I have a VPS, what is the best application to monitor my server services (ping, www, imap, etc)? Zabbix seems a cool application but it might be too much comprehensive. Something like uptime services such as: www.siteuptime.com www.serviceuptime.com

You can install either nagios or cacti. Both are good monitoring tools available now a days.

If you are looking at simple service monitoring for one server, you could try a custom shell script. For multiple servers and service monitoring nagios is my choice

Yeap, I fully agree with activelobby4u, as nagios works great for monitoring multiple servers.

Zabbix has the best features of monarch, nagios and cacti combined, and then even more features added to that. Zabbix is an evolutionary advancement over the likes of Nagios. May be a bit confusing for new user but once you got Idea how to use it it generates FULL statistics for you.

Nagios will do the trick, custom script can be used too.

Agreed with above. Nagios for up / down of services and ping. Cacti for performance monitoring and capacity planning.

Nagios can do all these things and if you have a good admin you can use Nagios for load monitoring, weekly/monthly reports etc. Even you can have sms alerts in nagios. Configuration is bit complex but overall its a fantastic tool.

For Nagios, we have to do some installation on the OS. Are there any apps that we don't have to install anything? I mean web based apps? Thanks..

You need to use custom scripts for this.

nagios is an ok app, but it's a pain to configure, and requires ICMP which is known to have flaws in it. If you've got multiple servers, you may want to brush up on your php, specifically fsockopen (for generic ports), parse_url (for checking webserver status), ftp_connect for handling ftp server status, and there's a few others. You can easily put together a script to check servers, I think the last time I rewrote my cron check to do just that it took 2-3 hours at best. HTH

Nagios is pretty good for monitering http, snmp, ftp, smtp, ping, tcp and udp services. It would suits to your requirements.

We have a backup monitoring service, (in addition to Nagios), that we have been using for more than 2 years, that is web based and we are very pleased with their performance. w w w. server-monitoring. n e t Take their free service for a test run (http only), and then you can add other services to suit your needs at fairly decent costs.
