Windows server 2008 security help

Posted by LP560, 03-19-2010, 03:01 PM
I have just over 10 years experience with linux during that time I've managed to stay clear of windows server! Anyway I have finally been asked to setup a windows 2008 server for 1 domain. We now have the server up and running and I installed the free 1 domain plesk control panel just to make things a bit easier to use (for the web designer anyway). Is there anything security wise I should do, is it like linux where I need to change ssh ports/disable unused services/apf/bfd/mod_security etc etc? Any advice appreciated

You should primarily enable your windows firewall and block all unnecessary ports. The good thing about windows 2008 is that it ie deployed by default with a good level of security. If you are unsure about other security aspects, i suggest getting someone to do it for you

Its tips I'm after. Is disabling the Administrator account and creating a new account with admin permissions necessary? Surely there must be a few sites around for WS2008 tips? Something like this but for Windows would be a good start if anyone knows of any: http://www.securecentos.com/
