[MERGED] Steadcom : Downtime sucks

Posted by Cynthia Blue, 09-03-2008, 06:00 PM
All my sites on my VPS are not reachable... nor is http://steadcom.com/ I hope this isn't just me... do they have a support phone number? I cannot submit a ticket as their ticket site is down too. I sent them an email.. who knows, maybe that's down for them too? Anyone else having this problem? They've been down for about an hour now.

Okay thanks for the info... I just like to know that they are on top of it.

Cynthia, We have a temporary page up for the steadcom site. Clear your DNS cache and try loading it again.

Posted by Cynthia Blue, 09-03-2008, 06:40 PM
Cleared my DNS cache... still saying Network Error (tcp_error) A communication error occurred: "No route to host" when I go to www.steadcom.com

Try through a proxy, it loads for quite some people already however it is still propagating. Here is an update: The server (node11)'s OS drive failed. We are preparing a new hard drive with a fresh OS then we will try to recover the data on the dead drive. Due to this issue, we will be implementing RAID into all of our servers starting next week. Any further update will be posted on the website. If you cannot see the site yet and have questions you can also PM me. I will be happy to assist. Last edited by eclouds; 09-03-2008 at 06:57 PM.

My VPS through Steadcom is still down. It's been down, along with all my sites, for over 12 hours now. I sent an email last night to support, and it returned undeliverable. Just now I sent one to the email listed on the home page... and I do hope to hear back soon. Not sure why, if it's supposedly just the hard drive that effects the main site, that my VPS is down too? Please help. Thanks.

I gotta say my first few months with Steadcom were great, solid uptime, great support, a perfect package. The lat couple months have been a bear though. I have experienced intermittent outages multiple times and the last ones is just too much. 24 hours now without ability access my server? I've tried going to their site to submit a ticket but I get a message: So is this implying that my VPS was hosted on the same server as their main website? Tried the emergency response but no reply as of yet. Just really disappointing and frustrated as emails are starting to bounce and sites hosted are loosing money. I know there are a couple steadcom folks around - can you help put my mind at ease?

Posted by j2m2, 09-04-2008, 12:15 PM
well sounds like you ran into a bit of a brick wall there. Someone from steadcom should be responding soon as they are pretty active... i think. funny thing i find is that most hosts like steadcom should have raid 1 configured or at least some back ups

Posted by reiteration, 09-04-2008, 12:24 PM
If its true this is quite shocking.

Posted by eclouds, 09-04-2008, 01:18 PM
It was responded to. Our website was hosted on a VPS that was in the node where your VPS was hosted as well.

Posted by eclouds, 09-04-2008, 01:20 PM
Drakkon, We have not received any emails from you although we did receive emails from other clients. Please try sending it to emergency@steadcom.com and I will personally respond to it.

Posted by Drakkon, 09-04-2008, 01:52 PM
Thank you for the update. I did get a response via the emergency address just a little while ago and it seems you guys are on the ball. I look forward to seeing my account up and functional again soon.

Drakkon, Cynthia, Kurogane, check your emails please. Those accounts are up at this time. Last edited by eclouds; 09-04-2008 at 02:08 PM.

Are you implying that your VPS nodes did not have RAID?

Posted by Drakkon, 09-04-2008, 02:21 PM
Apparently not - the email i got said "We have tried for all this time to recover data however the drive is too damaged and we were unable to do so. VPS servers are being re-created at this time for clients affected by this" - now that I actually have my account back its clear what has happened. my VPS is gone along with all extensions and everything installed. All my data, gone. All my accounts in lxadmin gone. My IP has changed. DNS entries gone Its like having to start from scratch all over again luckily i have backups but i can only imagine how long this is going to take to get back in order. I dunno what to say at this point. Truly a frustrating situation and all around cluster$@#

I apologize about that. It is a good thing that you indeed had backups,. Hardware failures like this are very unfortunate and are unexpected. This is another situation that shows once again that backups are very important and should not be overlooked. If there is anything I can do for you please do let me know.

Posted by RapidRick, 09-04-2008, 02:43 PM
hardware failures are expected, as are recovery techniques and fault tolerant block storage.

Thanks for the info.. I have gotten responses now so I feel better. I've just felt blind for the last day.

When will be a full server reconstruction? If they are installed new IP, why I do not get information for their change to our e-mail?

Posted by eclouds, 09-05-2008, 02:15 AM
It is being done at this current time. Expect an email shortly. You can PM me if you have any further questions.

Wow, steadcom has really gone downhill lately... I personally was not affected (aside from not being able to access steadpanel/node5), but this really..... First off, why didn't *STEADCOM* have backups? Isn't that like a responsibility? Second of all, the site says 99% network uptime.....so that would mean, get to the server, pull out a hard drive, put in a backup, and let users continue with life..... This is really making me reconsider my VPS with steadcom. I have a one-month credit because of stuff like this (my vps has gone down way too many times in the last month).. if you so recall I left a review on here not too long ago, but at this point if I had to re-write it, I'd have to change quite a few things, for the worse. Has anyone found stable VPS's with the same price range as steadcom? Do they allow irc servers? CB {}

Backups? We do not offer complimentary backups and yet we are doing everything to try to get the files back to the users. As seen hundreds of times here on WHt, users are responsible for their backups. Hardware failures happen everywhere, and all the time Would a hardware failure count as a network issue? If so, please do explain. That has absolutely nothing to do with the issue. Last edited by eclouds; 09-05-2008 at 02:46 AM.

this morning (8:30 am here in MDT) steadcom.com is not coming up for me... page load error. And the vm panel is very, very slow. Taking over 3 minutes to load so far. And my website doesn't seem to be coming up either... I have some appointments I need to run, hope to see it working better when I get back so I can rebuild my VPS. Thanks!

Something is still up with the Steadcom site. I'm wading through the site this morning trying to get to my billing and myvps pages and I'm stuck with timeouts and "page not found". I get to the myvps page and it continually times out. I've gone from a relatively decent node with an okay ping to a clearly overloaded node thats like a turtle. I have to be looking for a new provider after this. Steadcom did its best to restore service but I cannot afford to have a company who can't even get their OWN site back up in working order. May not have been Steadcom's fault legally for the downtime but Steadcom is running a company providing a service that failed miserably and due to their perceived incompetence the blame in the eyes of the consumers lies specifically on Steadcom.

I have a VPS with Steadcom as well and everything is VERY slow... It seems like the network is overloaded or they are getting hit with a DoS attack The packet loss is so severe I cannot get their client area to load enough to get a ticket in :-/

Someone is Ddosing us again, this is ridiculous.

Posted by FRH Dave, 09-05-2008, 01:43 PM
It's been my experience with hosting in general that the only decent backup solution is to keep one myself. I never trust my host's backups, I don't care who it is or how much I'm paying. My sites are just too important to me not to take a few minutes to prep and download a simple tarball. In defense of Steadcom, someone's been wailing on them with DDOS lately. That can happen to anyone. My personal experience with Steadcom has always been that they regard each individual customer as their ONLY customer, so I'm confident that they're doing everything they can to mitigate and prosecute the attacks. Even without my firsthand experience (and their reputation), I'd stick around. There isn't a single provider that can guarantee 100% uptime, and any provider that makes such a guarantee should be run from as fast as possible. I just noticed my sites were down earlier. They have since come back up (and ... down again ... up again ... and ... down), but are running slowly. Looks like Steadcom's main site is still down.

We are moving our website to a Ddos protected network at this time so it will be down for a bit. All our client's servers should be up. Your website is loading David at this time. We have mitigated and stopped the Ddos attack at this time. Last edited by eclouds; 09-05-2008 at 02:02 PM.

We concentrated all our efforts on putting OUR CLIENTS back up first before our own site. We care about our customers and would do anything for them. Yes, we are having issues and we cannot deny it. A Ddos attack, then a hard drive failure, than another Ddos attack. None of those could be prevented on our end however we are working hard to ensure that services are stable as we have been known to provide. We ask for your understanding in these situations as this isn't the service that you have known through us in the past and it will NOT be the type of service you will have in the future. We are doing EVERYTHING we can and stating that we are "imcompetent" simply does not seem adequate with this situation. If you have any questions, please PM me.

As of 5pm PST my site is finally back running - well kinda - still have to re-setup and propagate DNS servers but its a start I want to thank Dimitri and Steadcom staff for their help and diligent support during this time. I did not mean to imply any on their staff were "incompetent" - my comment was out of frustration and the perceived impression after 48 hours of sites coming up then back down . I realize you did your best and not all things can be accounted for. Just hoping this is a good lesson for the future.

Something must be still wrong, can not access their site from here in Australia just times out.

Hi, Our website is finally up and running smoothly as well as our support system. Please open a ticket If there is anything we can help you with and we will be more than happy to assist you!

Posted by CodeBlock, 09-06-2008, 06:14 PM
Site still not loading -.- really annoying... and node5.steadcom.com:8888 has been down for days.. what the heck, steadcom!? ><

Posted by eclouds, 09-06-2008, 06:25 PM
You can use the direct IP Codeblock. It hasn't been down, if our website is down the A records won't work PM me and I will give it to you. We are constantly getting Ddosed still and the Ddos appliance only gets there monday so we are filtering the attack at this point. However, this only affects our website and not our clients. PM me for the IP I will give it to you right away

That sucks! I hope it stops... my sites are fine. And my blogs will be 100% restored thanks to my own backups and RSS. My photo gallery and my forums I'm not sure about yet, but I do have DB backups from Aug 25 and so I'm pretty confident I'm at about 90% for my site.
