OpenVZ, Xen or VMWare

I'm planning to buy a VPS. What do you recommend me, OpenVZ, Xen or OpenVZ, what is better and why? I can't upgrade the kernel at any of those, right? Where could I get most of things I can configure for my needs, I heard OpenVZ is very limited.

OpenVZ - Cant upgrade the kernel, but great for a quick and easy hosting platform. Make sure your host knows what they are doing. Xen - Pretty much do whatever you want to it, some performance hit. Can potentially offer greater stability, availability, etc. Still make sure your host knows what they are doing.

vmware will allow you to run any kernel version, check out this guide for a list of all supported OS http://www.vmware.com/pdf/GuestOS_guide.pdf price maybe a factor depending on the features you are after

Will I be able to upgrade the kernel with Xen?

Yes, any kernel you want. With the right hardware (which most hosts should have) you can even run windows.

xen provides "isolated" machines. Supported guest OS isnt as extenisve as vmware, but the popular ones are on there. You shoul be able to run any kernel version. Which Guest OS are you planning on running?

Debian Lenny most probably. I would like to know if I pick Debian when I'm ordering the Xen VPS will I be able to upgrade the kernel with grsecurity off my VPS.

Xen allows you to run any kernel you desire, so if you can normally upgrade via grsecurity on a Debian box then you will be able to on a Xen VPS running Debian.

VMWARE would be ideal for upgrades and downgrades. Its a total isolation.

Are you guys totally sure I can compile and install other kernel with grsecurity in Xen? I tried and my VPS didn't come back after a reboot. Note: I don't have access to the whole node, I have only my Xen based VPS so I should be able to compile and install other kernel only with access to my VPS(not to whole VPS). I heard somewhere I can't do anything what has something to do with the kernel in Xen, the same like OpenVZ, is that true? Could please someone who tried it on his VPS reply. Thank you

One more for Xen, it is pretty fair resource usage solution

Greetings: VMWare and Citrix XenServer are pretty much neck to neck in the running. OpenVZ/Virutozzo is not true virtualization. Since all three are free (based on how you run/use them), pick the best one that works for you. In our case, we are finding XenServer to be the most attractive. Thank you.
