Emails not going through at new VPS

Posted by barxam, 12-15-2009, 01:08 PM
I run a small discussion forum for lawyers. It's at jdunderground.com. So far I was on a shared hosting plan at GoDaddy. But as the traffic increased, I decided to move. I signed up last week for a VPS at ServInt. To avoid spam, when people sign up at my site, I email them their password. So basically I send a verification email (much like WebHostingTalk does). At GoDaddy, this worked well. The emails went through and everything was fine. But after I moved to ServInt, I noticed that some of the emails are not going through and others are ending up in junkmail. Emails to Hotmail/Gmail are delivered fine to the inbox. Emails to yahoo addresses end up in the junk mail folder. And emails to aol, comcast, and many other .edu addresses are simply not being delivered. So I did some investigation. I looked into the /var/log directory and opened up the exim_mainlog file and saw that aol has blacklisted my IP Address - (RTR:BL). Similarly, Yahoo is throwing a 421 error message. According to yahoo, if you’re seeing the error "421 Message from x.x.x.x temporarily deferred - 4.16.50", in your SMTP logs, this indicates that emails from your mail server have been generating substantial complaints from Yahoo! Mail users. So as it turns out that ServInt has given me blacklisted IP Addresses. They have already moved me once but even with the other IP Addresses they gave me, it was the same problem. I am new to the VPS world. But is this normal? Can anyone reccomend a VPS company that wont give me busted IPs. I am going to call a few hosting companies. Can I ask them to check the IPs they are going to give me before I sign up. For e.g. can I ask them to send an email from the potential IP Address to my aol account. If it doesnt get through, it's probably another busted IP. This is really improtant because at this time I am losing traffic because many people are unable to get their passwords from me. And I cant do away with verification because then the Russians will just have a spam orgy on my site. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by barxam; 12-15-2009 at 01:15 PM.

It seems that your VPS provider gave you busted ips.. Contact your VPS provider and ask for non busted ips. Also ask them to contact Yahoo to unblock the ips.

dnsbl.info - good source to see if your IPs are listed in any major DNSBLs - it's not real time updates but it helps.

Firstly, have you contacted the host about this? Secondly, there are few things to keep in mind when dealing with situations like this: Is your reverse DNS set? If not, a fair few large providers will not accept emails from your server(s).Are you 100% sure that your mail server have not been compromised? Hope this helps.

We have always used the tool at http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx We once had a computer compromised in our network, so our IP was blacklisted. A simple antivirus scan and 72 hours later the IP was clear. If the entire subnet /24 is blacklist, good luck getting that only IP cleared out. One of my current VPS has the entire /24 block blacklisted. All I did is sign up with gmail and use their own servers for sending my mails via SMTP. So as mentioned earlier, make sure to check if your IP is blacklisted, or if an entire block of IPs is blacklisted. If only your IP is blacklisted, remove whatever spambot is using your server and after 72 hours the spam list will clear you away. Also make sure to have a proper PTR record for your domain: dig -x 64.15.64.91

Thanks so much for recommending our DNS tools! We are working hard on creating an all in one tool that does all the DNS test and lookups you could ever need! If you have any other tools additions or feedback, please let us know. Thanks, @MxToolBox

Hello, Please try to send email after clearing the exim databases. You can run the following commands

also worth setting up a reverse dns lookup for your IP - many spam filters will do a reverse lookup on the IP

Sometimes happen, I mean providers to have blacklisted IP Addresses, but what must not happen is any provider to give you blacklisted IPs. The shall know which IP addresses are blacklisted and to work to exclude them from black lists...
