hi, does server managed means, you rent the server and sit down and relax and create account for your clients, and when youre server is down due to apache failed or anything, the company where you rent your server will take care of it and is resposible for making it online again, is that the meaning of server managed or manage? i am a reseller and plans to get a server.

yes that explains most part of it, although some errors such as Apache failure can be fixed by yourself by a quick restart, remember the more you know the less you will have to rely on the company that is managing the servers for you to get everything up as quick as possible if the error is something small. They should also keep your server software upto date as well providing updates where nessecary.

Greetings: In general a managed server means that the provider does "some" management, you really need to ask each provider what they do and do not manage; and, what's included in the price as part of the managed portion. Thank you.

Some managed service only goes as far as applying standard patches as they are made available and reboot your server. Some would go about installing and configuring additional security functions such as firewalling, locking down your server and all that. The best means would be to check with your provider exactly what they would or would not do.

You will have to ask each provider what they term managed. To some managed is they will look at it if you ask to others it is proactive responses. To get the same level of service you get on a reseller account you will have to make sure that it is a proactive management plan where they monitor the server 24/7 and react to down services etc. Very few really do that level of management.

Speeking from a Colo providers point. I echo what has been said on this thread. You have to know what the managed hosting company provides. At the very least Patches backup should be provided. At a higher cost I am sure they can rendor app support. Marty

This is an excellent question. Generally a managed server is "fully managed" by the company you are dealing with. However in addition to the advice given here about what "managed" means, I would also recommend that you contact the company you may be dealing with, and ask them specifically, what "managed" does not include. There are slight differences in the approaches companies take, and asking stright foreward questions like that clarify things upfront. Best of luck. Cheers Jeff

Here is a snip from the DV2 DC where we have a few servers. ## DoS monitoring - we will monitor your server for DoS and notify you of attack. If incoming we will stop it at our gateway and if outgoing we will help you find the compromise. Hardware replacement - we will replace hardware at our expense with onsite spares. Hack recovery and dissection - if your server is hacked we will help you figure out why by going through logs and directories so we can secure it for future use. Services configuration help - our techs will help you initially configure and answer questions on services configuration including cPanel - DNS, email etc. Services restart - if you lose a service - we will restart it at your request if you do not have access. Server troubleshooting - server not performing well - we will help you trouble shoot it and make recommendations for performance improvements based on our observations. OS patch and security updates - we will update your computer using RedHat Network your request up to once a month at no charge. ## Now this not really proactive, but pretty darn good for the price Cheers

If you need a fully managed server with proactive monitoring be prepared to pay $499 or more per month. If your budget is lower than that..and you still want *proactive* monitoring then I would suggest you get more/bigger reseller accounts coz. that's closer to what you need ie. Only* selling and being relaxed.
