Posted by Shannara, 08-20-2009, 04:59 PM | Ok, the situation I am in, is that I have a Windows VPS with jodohost that is assigned two IP addresses. According to Jodohost and the welcome email, I should be able to ...
1. Take my godaddy domain, create name servers using the Host Summary tab (check)
2. The IPs used for those entries are the IPs from the VPS welcome email (check)
According to Jodohost, the domain should automatically point to the vps. However, it does not.
Therefore, I need to find a company that provides domain name services that allows me to point a domain to an ip address.
Does anybody know of any?

Then you would update the domain name registration to have those names as it's dns servers.
This makes your host's dns servers authoritative for your domain registration.
Then if you host has a console for dns management, you would add or update the "A" record for the zone to point to the IP of your VPS.
If your host doesn't provide DNS, I wouldn't even know what to say about that. ;-)

If I have to, i'll move to another provider that provides win vps with name servers. I love jodohost, but i guess my needs are unique?

1. Nope, according to jodohost they claim all I needed to do was create those host summary entries (at godaddy) to point to the two ip addresses provided in the vps email.
2. Yep, over 48 hours now.

Once you register the name servers, the second step is to assign those name servers to your domain in the domain registrar panel itself (in your case is GoDaddy).
If you have a control panel on your server the A record will be added itself Or you can add it manually if it's a plain VPS.
Long story short, when a person put your domain name in the browser, it searches for the registrar, there it checks what name servers are assigned to the domain, then it goes to the server where the name servers are pointing etc etc..
In your case, you registered the name servers but you didn't assigned to your domain so the request will not go ahead so make sure you assign the name servers to your domain as well.

I have a control panel for the winvps. They use Power Panel. I cant find anything in there to reference the domain with. Is there a place to manually add the A record? I dont use IIS (if that makes a difference).

We provide DNS in the Hsphere billing panel but you will need to make custom DNS records to point to your VPS IPs, that is if you use the shared nameservers.
Otherwise use the custom nameservers pointing to your VPS controlled IPs.
you posted on another thread on our forums, but did not provide the detail given here, nor have I seen requests on tickets for this info. if you do NOT have plesk you will have to install your own nameserver on the VPS for the custom nameservers to work at all, as it doesn't have a DNS server installed otherwise. When I answered the other client on that topic, they had plesk and all answers applied toward that.

To all who read this, I apologize. I misunderstood.
I'll install a dns server on the vps then. Thank you all for your help.

Posted by Shannara, 08-23-2009, 04:21 PM | Just to update for anybody who wants to run a dns server on their windows vps (2003) ...
1. simple dns plus is fake. It doesnt run on win2003
2. Bind/Win doesnt do a thing either .. weird.
3. posadis "installs" and sits in the file system ...
4. ms dns is way over complicated for a simple dns setup.
The best thing I found was godaddy's foward feature. But its not DNS. ..
If anybody knows of a working dns server that isnt OC, for windows 2003, please let me know.
