HELP! - Hardware or Software RAID - Which is better?

Posted by wolfdog, 04-19-2009, 08:25 AM
Hi I have researched this topic and can not find any solid answer. Some say a good RAID card like 3Ware is the answer. However the 3Ware 9690 RADI only runs at 300 MHz Others say that with quad and dual quad core systems, so much processing power is available that Linux built in "dmraid" is much faster, especially for RADI 10. Then where does the INTEL Matrix RAID on the motherboard come in? Its software too, but somehow manages to help out the Linux dmraid in some way. HELP Thank You Wolfdog

I always use hardware raid, so have no real experience about software raid, but I have heard that soft-raid is not plug-n-play if you need to replace disk drive. You will need to do some manual jobs with software raid.

I prefer Hardware RAID. This will reduce CPU load.

Hardware raid is always better than software raid

Software RAID relies on the OS & CPU, while hardware RAID works by itself.

Linux software raid (MDADM) is excellent for RAID1, however it depends on the circumstances. i.e. if you want a hotswap setup then you are better off with hardware RAID. The most common way of doing software raid 10 using Linux SW Raid is two RAID1 sets and LVM over the top of those two sets. The performance will not be as good as hardware raid, and it will use up more cpu cycles. Therefore I would say if you are on a budget, use Linux software RAID1. But if you can afford it, or if you need RAID 10, get a real hardware RAID card. As for Intel Matrix, thats AHCI FakeRAID and is not worth bothering with.
