How to test Squid

Posted by turbowarp, 04-05-2009, 12:07 AM
Hello, I just installed Squid V3. I set up putty to ssh socks proxy to my vps that I installed squid on. Here is a snippet of my cache.logs, but there is no cache log of websites I have visited. The access.log is empty. How to I tell if squid is working?

What config have you got setup? If your browser works through it, and no errors appear while accessing sites during your browser is configured for the squid server then it should be running fine.

Check the server header for a squid version reply.

I am not sure how to check if my browser is working through squid. Prior to installing squid I proxy surfed via this vps through ssh tunnel. Now that I have installed squid, there is no change. Putty is forwarded through destination port 8080 and squid is set to http_port 8080. My browser is set socks5 port 8080. When ssh is running I successfully tunnel to the internet. When ssh is not running, I don't get to the internet. But, I don't think that I am going through the proxy either, because I don't see anything in the logs.

yes, because you use tunneled socks instead of squid. Check your configuration on squid and add this : on your acls and on your http_access line On your browser change your proxy setting to http proxy with your vps IP and port

Thanks, that is working now with the browser. (Not via SSH tunnel, but I'll figure SSH tunnel out later.) However, I am not able to access https sites.

use the same proxy for your https / ssl access on your browser

I do have the same proxy and port ... when I try to surf to a https site it says access denied.

you should put your acl along with another acl and http_access with another http_access for your http_access try to move it after this word or after http_access deny !Safe_ports
