MCHost Customer Service

Posted by epanico, 07-11-2002, 09:34 AM
I've been using MCHost since February, and for the most part they've been OK (considering they're $35 a month, thet've been great!). However, I've got an issue that I've submitted at least 5 customer service inquiries for and have not gotten an answer even approaching being adequite. I'm not sure if this is due to the incompitance of the customer support staff or if they are intentionally ignoring me because they don't want to fix the problem. Well, here it is in detail... maybe someone here has dealt with something similar: I've got one domain on my account that uses a lot of disk space: 370MB. However, WHM and CPanel reports the domain as using 785MB. The customer pays for 500MB, and I set his limit at 500MB. But if I leave his limit at 500, he starts to bounce e-mail. I am forced to increase his space alotment to 1GB just so that he can receive e-mail. I just want this problem fixed, or an explaination, or a worka-around. I also want to know what happens if WHM misreports my usage at over 1GB, my total limit for my account. Do all my accounts start bouncing e-mail??? If anyone else has had similar problems with the MCHost support staff, please post in this thread. Thanks. -Eric- Last edited by Chicken; 07-12-2002 at 10:49 PM.

Eric Have you tried emailing Marc direct? Might be better than doing here. But it sounds like the server may need to have /scripts/fixquotas run on it.

I think that is common in WHM, to misrepresent totals. Cpanel will also show a different total sometimes. As suggested try /scripts/fixquotas to see if that helps.

Monte, I will send Marc an e-mail. As for fixquotas, you'd think if it were that simple they would just do that. I got one response from MCHost saying that they wanted to delete the account and recreate the domain. The problem is that that's what I had to do with this client the last time this happened and it's a pain in the neck for him because it's a lot to upload and set up. thanks... Dunno, I would ask Marc to run it on the server for you to try it. If that doesn't fix it let us know I am sure we can all put our heads together to help you out.

have you checked if total customer space used is 370M including email and log files? It could be the customer is using 370M of his own files only and that number will be adding to email + logs.. Just an idea.. SSH login would be the easiest to confirm..

Joana, Thanks for the advice. Poking around using FTP and the CPanel, I can't find any evidence of excessive hidden disk usage. The log file is less than 1MB. I'm not sure if MCHost allows SSH login, and if they do, I'm not sure how to do it. Anyone know? -Eric-

Log in with shell as that user and du -ms /home/yourusername It'll display a summary of how man megs are used. If quota (system quota ) is saying you're using over 500mb - you are. CPanel boxes aren't setup to calculate log files into quotas either.. or mysql (i'm pretty sure), otherwise you'd need to look at those too.

Good luck with emailing Marc directly - he gets an impossible ammount of email each day, so dont expect a responce via email. the only way to contact staff is via the helpdesk and put FAO: Marc or sothing to get one of the "real" staff's attention (other than bobcares).

I actually did get through to Marc via e-mail, got a nice response from him yesterday: >> : We're working on fixing the quotas for you right now. It should take between 10-15 minutes max. Thanks for your patience! << It's been a day since I got this message, and the problem still exists with no update from Marc yet. I'll keep posting until I get a resolution.

I don't know if you fixed this, but check yours tmp folder there are storaged the logs and they usually use a lot of space.

You dont have to reload the site from scratch to do this. Just tar the public_html dir and backup the db's and any other critical parts... then recreate the site and put each part back , untar them. Shouldnt take more than a few minutes even with 500mb. ... unless the server is just that weak. Last edited by Chicken; 07-12-2002 at 10:49 PM.

Here's the latest... yesterday's response from MCHost: Hi, I checked out the disk usage for you . It appears to be fine. The earlier modification was a consequence of a CPanel bugs which often sets quotas to "unlimited". However, the bug was traced and fixed permanantly, which is why you saw the quotas restored to their original values. Thank You, Have a good day, Warm Regards, Deepu, MCHost Support How come everyone thinks my disk usage is fine???????????? IT'S NOT!!!!!!! Disk usage is being reported by WHM to be much higher than actual!!! WHY IS IT THAT NO ONE AGREES WITH THIS! I feel like I must be nuts or something, like I'm the only one who believes my disk usage is so much lower. Last edited by epanico; 07-14-2002 at 02:01 PM.

There is a technician working on fixing your problem, but its quite extensive and takes a while. In the meantime, take a look at this thread: http://forums.cpanel.net/read.php?TID=2728 CPanel/WHM likes to mess up the quotas from time to time, its not happening only to us and you don't have to worry about us shutting down your account because of it. Also please note that our technicians cannot search for support-related threads on WebHostingTalk to find if you're still having problems, so please make sure you reply everything you do here in your support ticket as well so that we can keep track of it and resolve it as soon as possible.

thanks Marc, I always use the support ticket system as well. The reason I have chosen this forum to yell a little is because it seems that my true issue is being ignored. I understand that Cpanel messes up, and it's great that I won't be charged for overages because of it. It's also nice to know that the problem is still being worked on, but a couple of days ago, I was told it would be fixed in 10 or 15 minutes. If it's going to be a few days, just TELL me so I don't feel like I'm being jerked around. When I get replies from the support staff saying everything looks fine after going back and forth for a week with no resolution, I really feel jerked around. If it's a problem with CPanel and it can't be fixed, just TELL me... so I don't feel like I'm getting jerked around. I don't even care if it never gets fixed. I'll learn to live with the problem as long as I know how to set things up so e-mail doesn't start to bounce. Again, thanks for dealing with me... sorry to be a pain in the ass. -Eric-

I must admit that fixing the quotas is low priority, not saying you don't reserve a reply but there are usually more important things to do than fix the quotas up. Remember that's it's a error with cpanel - hosts use cpanel - they aren't responsible usually for the cause of the errors, we just keep fixing them
