Deal with outages on shared host

Posted by richtestani, 03-24-2009, 01:47 PM
I run and maintain many websites on a shared server (ICDSoft) While I am extremely happy with their service and support, the outages are still a problem when they happen. Especially for the e-commerce customers. They are beginning to ask what do we do in this situation? Generally I reply, there is nothing to do but wait in this situation. Am I wrong about this? What do you do? Thanks Rich

You can ask your hosts to have an RCA(Root Cause analysis) on why this is happening often.

There really isn't much you can do if you don't have full access to the server. Make sure they are aware of the problem, and find out what it is, but other than that it's a waiting game.

ICDSoft has a support site - todays outage was DDoS on Savvis servers in Boston, so the outage was probably no more than a half hour and it wasn't their fault it happened. I was thinking of forwarding the domain to another server, but I figure it woudn't be worth it with all the propagation that needs to occurs - it would be back up before the propagation finished. Unless forwarding works differently - like a 303 temporary forwarding. (i think thats the status code) Thanks! Rich

Greetings to all, We noticed this thread about today's incident and we would like to provide some information about it. The problem was caused by a heavy DDoS attack against a website hosted on one of our servers at SAVVIS. Our system administrators reacted swiftly and after filtering the traffic to the affected IP, assigned a new IP address for the server under attack. The server was immediately accessible, without any need for propagation. We also quickly discovered which domain was the target of this attack and disabled access to it. Anton Atanasov, ICDSoft

For all the outages, your provider should have an announcement posted in their announcement board / network status forum with the same info given by ICD Supervisor here. Those posts or status section usually help you in answering your customers.

ICDSoft does have a network Status page for all of their servers, plus when an emergency outage occurs it is reported promptly to that page. Thank you Anton for you extra clarification on the outage.

If you are happy with that provider, ask them to move you to another server/IP range which is more quite, or get at least a dedicated IP for your customers that does not belong to the main shared pool Quel
