BIND + Dovecot - can't get to the mail server? Hello there WebhostingTalk people! I have a what seems like a quick question. I'm hosting my own DNS servers via bind, and everything seems to be nice and dandy. However, I cannot seem to receive email, and when I do a check via pingablity it tells me there is a timeout error when trying to reach my MX record. I *am* able to access the POP/IMAP server (which is powered by Dovecot) through Outlook and other email clients. I know it is an issue with iptables because as soon as I turn it off pingability is able to reach my mail server just fine. I do have port 53 open as well as 1024-65535 UDP ports open. I've scouted internet for hours trying to find the cause of the problem with no results. Could anybody point me in the right direction? Much appreciated

So are you having issues receiving email with pop/imap when iptables is on? __________________HostPenguin - Separate Yourself ● A Christian Owned and Operated Hosting Provider!● Shared, Reseller, Virtual Private Server Hosting and Website Integrationshttp://www.HostPenguin.net - http://Integration.HostPenguin.net - Sales@HostPenguin.net

That's the odd part - the email clients connect just fine but there is never any new email. No matter which account I send mail from it never gets to the inbox. I'm not sure but it seems like the proper ports for Davecot are opened so the clients can connect but whatever is responsible for the MX record and telling the world about it is blocked. Port 53 is open though so I don't know what's up..

Check if port 110 and 143 are open. __________________HostPenguin - Separate Yourself ● A Christian Owned and Operated Hosting Provider!● Shared, Reseller, Virtual Private Server Hosting and Website Integrationshttp://www.HostPenguin.net - http://Integration.HostPenguin.net - Sales@HostPenguin.net

Actually I just tried to telnet over to port 25 and it timed out. So I checked my firewall setting script and it appears that there was an error on the line that opened up port 25. Everything seems to work fine now . Can't stand little typos that render everything useless, which is especially true for when you're drunk like I was when I was having these issues yesterday . Thanks!
