Lighttpd, PHP 5.2 and "looks like the fastcgi-backend (/) terminated"

We're running two servers with identical configurations, both running Lighttpd 1.5.0 and PHP 5.2.4, however one of the servers is generating the following error in the PHP error log: looks like the fastcgi-backend (/) terminated before it sent a FIN packet We've been Googling all morning and found nothing so I was wondering if anyone perhaps has had the same problem or might know what we could do to fix it. It's quite strange as it's only one of the two servers which generates this error. Thanks in advance for any help!

In case anyone also has this problem - it looks as though PHP was crashing on file_put_contents when writing to the error log once it had exceeded a particular file size.
