Mail Server Setup / DNS

Posted by BoggeRs, 09-05-2008, 10:56 AM
I have had one server running for the longest time on domain1.com for example running cpanel, recently I ordered another server that is running directadmin. After securing the directadmin - BFD and so on - sends emails - but its not sending any because they get stuck in Mail Queue Administration within directadmin. This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: the hostname is server2.domain1.com, it seems like it doesnt want to send the email. I have added my domain1.com to the dns administration - and it has a mail.domain1.com to the ip address on server1 and mx entry (only) to the mail directory. I dont know why its not sending the email and it keeps coming back. If anyone is able to help please let me know or some tutorials or something. Thanks

if you examine /var/log/exim_mainlog and /var/log/exim_rejectlog on the server sending, you should see an error which explains why the mail couldnt be sent.

Is this a typo? Your MX entry should point to the host name of the mail server for your domain (mail.domain1.com).

I looked at the logs and this is what I noticed.... mail server shouldn't be on the server2 it should go out to the internet and figure out what mail.domain1.com is.... if anyone is able to help it would be much appreciated.

I may be reading that entirely wrong, but... isn't it saying it tried, but was rejected, because the sender domain is invalid? Does server2.domain1.com exist in DNS?

Its not supposed to send the email to server2 - its supposed to send it to the main email server mail.domain1.com where my www.domain1.com exists (server1).

Right. But is @server2.domain1.com actually in DNS? One of the arguments seems to be bogs@server2.domain1.com, and it's complaining about an unroutable address - so one side is thinking it doesn't, just as a guess.

but yes server2.domain1.com does indeed resolve to the ip address of the second server Should I not have any domain added tot he second server? thinks domain1.com is on its server so it sends for local delivery instead of actual internet

If i email my gmail - email goes through - only when i try to email lets say crontab logs to the same domain that the servers hostname it doesnt send

If it's not going to be handling mail for the domain, then no, it shouldn't be in the local names and you should take it out.
