mod_auth + MySQL?

Is there a way to make Apache use a MySQL database for authentication (a la mod_auth) instead of its digest file? A few years ago, there was mod_auth_mysql ( http://modauthmysql.sourceforge.net/ )... But they last released code in 2005, and it seems like they're no longer in Debian's package repository... So I'm not too eager to try installing it from source. Is there a new way to do this? I can't believe that such a project would just vanish if it wasn't usurped by something better... But I can't find it?
