MSSQL server05 SP1 fixes?

Over the last few days I have been trying to patch a server08 machine running SQL05 to SP1/2 and have been having the same Error Code 66E (1646) / "Cannot remove HF3024" errors that seem to be plaguing people. I've been on the technet forums constantly searching for a fix, but all the fixes people have posted have not worked with my environment. Today I moved the machine to MSSQL Server 08 and things seem okay, but if I run into this issue with any of my other machines I'll be working on soon, I would like to know of any possible fixes available.
