Who is down: HostNexus or IANA?

Posted by alosito, 06-01-2008, 03:52 AM
I host my site (prepaidcall.com) with HostNexus. My site has been down since 2 pm PST 05/31/08. HostNexus's web site (hostnexus.com) also appears to be down since the same time. When I run a tracert, it shows a time-out at one of the IANA's IPs. Does anybody else experience the same problem with his site because of IANA? I have no way of contacting HostNexus because all their contact information is on their web site, and it is down now.

I can access nexus. They show threads to the outage issue ...

HostNexus had a message posted on a temporary page. It is now down, too, but it said that there was an electrical fire in the Houston facility. They are dealing with the issue. Four servers were affected - sorry, I do not have the names - and the estimated time for them to be back online is around 2pm on Sunday.

IANA is the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.

I changed the DNS to redirect HostNexus to a server at FortressITX with a message about this outage. It will take some time to propagate though. Hundreds of hosts are sharing in our misery at this situation.

How do you know about the estimated time? According to http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=90185 they "do not have an Estimated Time to Repair at present".

I am not sure there is a good estimate on the time to the reports and what is happening.

Can you access prepaidcall.com?

Posted by NexDog, 06-01-2008, 04:27 AM
Prepaidcall.com will be down until The Planet fixes its situation. The Nexus page he was referring to was a temporay one I put up. I'm in the same boat as you. No-one here can do anything so we just have to be patient and hope the data center guys get it all up and running as quickly as humanly possible.

Ouch, hope they get this sorted. 9,000 servers down.

Yea, there's always a situation that someone isn't prepared for and it always does happen. Think it's called Sod's Law or something. :p

Not Murpheys Law eh!

Wow this is going to drop ThePlanet's uptime by quite a lot. Hope you guys get it resolved soon.

Damn. Two days of downtime and counting. It has never been that bad in ten years.

Posted by NexDog, 06-01-2008, 09:06 PM
Indeed. More downtime than teh last eight years combined for hostnexus.com. They are doing some pwer testing right now apparently so hopefully there is light at the end of this tunnel. We created temporay support mail addresses yesterday on the temporary server location so we could still provide emergency support though. As soon as I saw there was going to be no quick fix I changed our nameservers to point elsewhere. The temporary location has DNS set with a low TTL so it can be pointed back immediately after The Planet is back up.
