Mystical Remount !!

Posted by NetGeek, 07-06-2008, 04:47 AM
Hi I have a problem with my file systems where they are remounted mystically to Read-only file system. I checked the /etc/mtab but it seems that files are mounted read-wirte. root@server [~]# touch /usr/local/apache/logs/audit_log touch: cannot touch `/usr/local/apache/logs/audit_log': Read-only file system root@server[~]# cat /etc/mtab /dev/sda5 / ext3 rw,usrquota 0 0 none /proc proc rw 0 0 none /sys sysfs rw 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0 /dev/sda1 /boot ext3 rw 0 0 none /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0 /dev/sda6 /home ext3 rw,usrquota 0 0 /dev/sda7 /tmp ext3 rw,noexec,nosuid 0 0 /dev/sda2 /usr ext3 rw,usrquota 0 0 /dev/sda3 /var ext3 rw,usrquota 0 0 none /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc rw 0 0 sunrpc /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs rpc_pipefs rw 0 0 /tmp /var/tmp none rw,noexec,nosuid,bind 0 0 After a reboot the server will work fine for a minute or so before this happens. This problem started after Exim went out of control and started many processes, brought server load +300 and halt the server. I am running RH+WHM/CPanel Can anybody help!

Your hard disk is dying. You need to probably get it replaced

why do you think it is dying?

you can try run a manual fsck.

Usually partitions only get remounted read-only automatically after the system encountered some problem with the file system or drive in question. So running fsck and also checking if the hard disk produced errors is what should be done.

Now after unsuccessful reboot it seems I lost my operating systems files. The technical support bring the server back using RIP Linux Livecd. they mounted the old filesystems (where actually all my data is) on /mnt/oldfs What should I do next? Do I just mv the files to the old directories? or do I mount them? What are the exact steps? I know this sounds silly but am not good at the filesystems and don't want to mess things up again

It seems your operating system files got corrupted and you need an OS reinstall on a new hard disk. Once OS install completed you can ask data center to mount you old disk as secondary and restore your files to new hdd.

Only problem with that is, some hosts will charge for it to be mounted as a secondary. I had an experience with FDC - where they gave me a faulty hard drive, told me a bunch of times it wasnt the HDD, then said "oops HDD" and asked if for an additional cost i wanted it mounted as a secondary to attempt restore. Good luck
