FTPS on cPanel server

Posted by Hamid Reza, 07-07-2008, 04:09 AM
Hello, I`m going to use FTPS for one of my accounts on a cPanel Server. Should I assign a dedicated IP to that account, then install SSL on FTP.DOMAIN.COM? Please share your knowledge and help me setup that. Thanks.

Personally I would use SFTP instead which is done over a secure SSH connection. The best bit is you don't have to mess around with installing SSL certificates on the FTP accounts etc.

I too would recommend to use SFTP which is secured.

Hello, Thank you for your recommendation. Is SFTP more secure than FTPS? Does it require Dedicated IP like FTPS? Is it accessable via FTP Programs? Is it possible to refer me to an article to find how to create SFTP for an account?

SFTP uses SSH. Actually SFTP is a sub-system of SSH. If you enable SSH for the account, you would be able to use SFTP. Secondly, you may also configure public key authentication which will allow you to connect and upload without requiring for a password. I believe Filezilla as well as other FTP programs support SFTP. It will not require a dedicated IP address. You will have to enable only SSH for the account in question.

In cPanel 11, shell access does not need to be enabled to be able to use SFTP.

You can use WinSCP program to upload files to your web server using SCP or SFTP protocol.
