Editing a DNS Zone

Posted by Ahoy, 03-11-2008, 12:32 PM
Hi all - Hope i'm in the right place: I need to edit a DNS Zone (via WHM=> DNS Zone Edit) of a domain hosted on my server & which NS's are routed to. New setting should route domain to a seperate server (i.e HTTP, FTP) and leave EMAIL on my server. I've changed all settings, except MX & mail CNAME, to the new IP (This includes NS's, A's, CNAME's - WWW & ftp). Still the WWW is not working and email has stopped working localy. What could be wrong?

Your post not clear enough. Can you explain using some example records? Specify the DNS settings (resource records) at the domain registrar, at the first server and at the second (new web and FTP) server so that we could get a clear picture of your scenario. Thank you.

DOMAIN is set to NS.main-server at old-IP There, on WHM: DOMAIN => NS => new IP DOMAIN => A => new IP WWW => cname => new IP FTP => A => new IP DOMAIN => MX => old-IP mail => CNAME => old-IP DOMAIN http is reachable via the new IP and works fine. Only MAIL & WWW r not working.

What is the authoritative name server for your domain? As i understand, it is still pointing to the old server's IP. If so, keep the NS to point to the same old IP, and add A records for WWW and ftp to point to the new server's IP. That should solve the issue. Else <> and we can help you pin-point the root cause. Currently - I've set the local zone NS's to the new IP (Unlike the auth. NS's which point to the old IP). As per u advice, i've changed them to the old-IP ... wait a few hrs and see.

Still no change for the better ... should i wait longer (Conidering there is 86400 TTL and 24hrs didn't pass yet) or do u have any other idea?

Time must pass... You have to allow the DNS cache on your upstreams to expire. Wait until it's been more than 24 hours since your last changes and you should be all set.

Not sure if these were meant to be taken literally, but if so they're never going to work. NS, MX and CNAME records need to point to hostnames, only A records point to IPs. You probably want something like this: Post or PM the domain name if you'd like it checked.

Hi Ahoy, If you want to keep the old server as your nameserver, you can follow what i said. If you want to set the new server as your nameserver, follow what foobic has said. In any case, it should not take this long! Did i miss out something? Please change your domain name and IP addresses, and give out the details here. Also specify the dns settings at your domain registrar.

As foobic pointed out, CNAMEs might be where you are misconfiguring DNS (which I have overlooked). Pls chk and confirm.
