rDosti Internet Services Pvt. Ltd. - Servers are Down. Disk Failure

Posted by RDOSTI, 05-25-2008, 02:07 AM
During a Virtuozzo update, our server had to reboot. For some reason it failed to reboot and we contacted the Hivelocity Datacenter. We have just been informed of (another) Harddisk failure. We are looking for an update on why the harddisk failed and why Virtuozzo (our main panel) is causing so many issues on Hivelocity Datacenter systems. A full cancellation and refund option (for remaining months) will be offered to clients. We can not begin to say how sorry we are and how the timing is just pathetitic. We blame only ourselves for this mishap and hopefully will get this fixed up (with help of Hivelocity). We are looking at an unknown downtime and will be working to restore backups as well. We are considering a datacenter change (provider) for someone more experienced with the Virtuozzo Panel so such issues dont happen. We are already in contact with various providers, however looking for help from Hivelocity as well. I know everyone's going to be angry but we're doing our best here. Like last time we're going to get this settled (to our best) and as mentioned - we will not go back to online ads for new hosting UNTIL we get to the final root of this and also make a lot of changes to our own admins (company internal). We are as sick of this as you - the clients are --- and once again we are proactive to report our downtime, before anyone else (clients) do. We know this will hurt our image as a low cost but good provider - however we will go ahead and accept fault and work on this. For a few recent clients who broke the terms (they were emailed/ticketed in the last few days) no refund will be given to them for breaking of terms (CPU Usage, or Copyright downloads). We are not sure whether this was caused by Virtuozzo at this time or whether it was our liberal move to allow some access to a few items on the server (disable spamassasin) which might have caused a massive spam flood (that we have been noticing, and had restricted till a customer complained). We will anyhow get an update from Hivelocity soon and let you know. Once again we accept blame and fault here - this is not acceptable to our company standards as well and we will be taking cancellation & refund requests at "insidefremont@hotmail.com". Clients who can ride another wave with us , are requested not to email us for cancellation and wait for an update and hopefully get things settled. One time is a pain, two is crap,...3 is a disgrace...we want to end this at 2....and try to make it better. We are doing our best (with Hivelocity Support) to get our server/s up again and get you back online. I apologize again...though alot of users will just treat us like crap and go on saying stuff...the fact is we're doing our best right now..else we wouldnt be posting here and probably just wait for a customer to say something. We might be unable to get back to emails of users or posts here for a while - we're trying to get our server pushed up the support queue (seems theres pretty more issues ahead of us and supposedly more important). Hope for the best. HIVELOCITY TECH UPDATE: "Fixed disk failure on sata0. We will know more one the server is de-racked and put on a bench however there are servers ahead of this one. We will update this ticket once more in known."

Server was up in 2 hours. We are working with Hivelocity on a new server deal (potential). There was 2 hour downtime overall. We are working on getting backups remotely and then upgrading server to RAID or so. We should have no more outages...there might be a bit of slow connectivity or high loads while we backup all the servers (in the node) Regards PS - We would like to thank Hivelocity's Shannon for getting us up fast

If you guys need to get some numbers crunched I am in the office today. Your best options for a VPS server are going to be RAID 5 or RAID 10. RAID 10 has the best performance and the best backup it also requires more disks to accomplish this but I'm sure we can work something out. Good to hear you're up fairly quickly. What was your ticket # so I can try to look it a once over.
