How do VPS control panels connect to.....

Same way with cPanel. You do not need cPanel to manage a server but it makes managing a server easier.
It probably uses php/mysql & perl & c++.

| Posted by WebSliceNZChris, 02-14-2010, 05:21 PM | | Control panels do what they do by issuing commands given to them by the software they're controlling. You can think of it as something like an API, these commands can be used by you to initiate actions on the software.
Like the others said, most if not all of this can be done from the CLI by just issuing the correct commands; the control panel is just there to make it easier for you and offer you a better looking interface to use.

Cpanel includes predefined scripts that controls your server in a very short span of time. Without Cpanel, all the settings should be made manually which is very time consuming. Plesk,Directadmin are also used for managing servers.
