Setting nameservers???

Posted by poprulz, 01-08-2008, 05:15 PM
This is the exact scenario I have got a dedicated server with cpanel/whm hosting just 1 single domain. The domain is registered with godaddy and with custom nameservers given by my host. Now i moved my server to a new host, and they are not willing to add entries to their nameserver for my domain which means i should be running my own nameservers. How do i go about doing this? these are few things i have done so far. My main ip : hostname.domain.com 1 dedicated IP to my domain.com ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com are added each with 1 ip 1. Resolver Conf Edited, added my 2 new ips (primary & secondary) of ns1 and ns2 and tertiary that of my provider nameserver ip. 2.Edited DNS Zone entries manually and this is how it looks like =>DNS Zone for domain.com with ns1 and ns2, A and MX record with CNAME for services =>ns1.domain.com has NS entries, A record for the ip =>ns2.domain.com - same =>hostname.domain.com - NS entries and A record for the main ip 3 Resrted BIND CHECKED cat /etc/nameserverips cat /etc/resolv.conf cat /etc/wwwacct.conf cat /etc/named.conf cat /etc/hosts Everything looks fine. 4, nslookup on my new ns1.domain.com IP did resolve new domain.com ip, but still if i try to do a digg on "ns1.domain.com" instead of new IP it will resolve to my old box domain.com ip. So how do i add new nameserver entries to the godaddy domain control panel, IP cannot be added as nameserver ,it should be FQDN . Anyone with possible fix? What does the following command result? rndc reload domain.com dig @new_server_ip ns1.domain.com

Can't you do all of this in WHM? Not that I'm against doing it manually, but aren't you afraid WHM will overwrite your changes?

Old server setup 209.250.239.X - server.domain.com 209.250.239.X - ns1.domain.com 209.250.239.Y - ns2. domain.om 209.250.239.Z - domain.com My provider added my domains A entry of main IP and MX record to their nameservers, so i just had to those nameserver entries to the godaddy domain ontrol panel. Now I got a new dedicated server from another provider, so i did the setup same as above, did a tranfser via WHM. 66.197.168.X - svr.domain.com 66.197.168.X - ns1.domain.com 66.197.168.Y - ns2.domain.com 66.197.168.Z - domain.com Now the new provider refused to add the A and MX entries for domain.com to their nameserver and asked me to ad my won nameservers for the domain. But my old box is still up and ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com is resolving to my old box, how do i make the nameservers pick my new nameserver ips? I don't want to take down my old box either. i hope this is more clear now.

You need to update at the registrar the nameserver IPs to the new ones.

You mean adding the new nameservers IPs I have set in the godaddy domain control panel( the domain is registered with godaddy). But in that case godaddy doesn't allow adding nameserver IPs.

Does not they allow registering child nameservers?

I made a few changes like, changed the nameserver names so that it won't make any conflict dns1.domain.com - ip1 dns2.fomain.com - ip2 I tried to add these entries to my godaddy nameserver control panel i get an error - nameserver not registered
