chat that wont overwhelm server?

I need to implement a chat but I need that it wont overwhelm the server any suggestions??????????? if is easy to set up it would be even better!!!!!!!! I am trying phpfreechat which uses ajax files as container, is that method better than using mysql as a acontainer?

you just want a web based chat? or a full on chat server?? full on id say jabber. web not sure.

Some customers use flashchat on our freebsd/lighttpd servers. They don't have many users online at the same time, maybe 10 or 15 each, but servers runs at low load, less than 0.25.

any irc daemon and jpilot. unrealircd is a decent start.
