Hostdime Outage 5/23/08 [Merged]

Posted by JenniH, 05-23-2008, 08:40 AM
Everything seems to be down, including hostdime.com and the support desk. As the telephone is dead too (at least from here), this doesn't look to good. Anyone else?

Greetings all, Was wondering is any one else having weird problems with Hostdime datacenter today. Five times today we have noticed that the hostdime.com desk.hostdime.com and other sites all appear to go off-line Also noticed the IP's dont respond to a ping. It's worrying since our main VPS is run by these guys and it is also offline not responding to the VZP control panel or a ping Though what concerns me the most is that for the most recent outage we happend to be connected to the server via SSH at the time and it sent out a message to us; Broadcast message from root (Fri May 23 13:15:00 2008): The system is going down for system halt NOW! Which would kind of indicate someone at the datacenter has shut down all the servers! A fear confirmed by the hostdime main sites no longer being accessable, their mailservers no long responding etc. Also noticed that their phone system appears to be fouled up as we have been trying for over half an hour to contact them and it just rings out, or disconnects with an 'All Circuits are Bussy' message. Thourghts, Comments and most of all some kind of reply from a Hostdime Rep would be welcome. PS I'm still awaiting an explanation to the catastrophic incident where the VPS server was killed off for an entire business day. Must say hostdime - I used to be a Dedicated customer (when at another company) which is why I stuck with you but your support standards are slipping, I note your forum is also very quiet these days, almost like people dont care anymore... It's just an opinion so dont flame me!

Posted by JenniH, 05-23-2008, 08:57 AM
Absolutely not. Try hostdime.com for example. SiteUpTime May 23, 2008 05:55:50 San Francisco United States Failed May 23, 2008 05:56:14 New York United States 10.080 Failed May 23, 2008 05:56:24 London United Kingdom 10.080 Failed Plus varies proxies, etc. It is down. And their phone number is still dead.

They are down for us too... no response on the phone been trying to. I live in Orlando... I think I'm going to drive down there and see what the hell is happening.

Posted by Corleone187, 05-23-2008, 09:00 AM
I'm glad I found this forum. If you can check kastro662 that would be great. I've been with them since 2004 and this time I have lost it! Manny where are you?

Posted by kastro662, 05-23-2008, 09:08 AM
Okay our server seems to be back up now... was about to walk out the door to see what was up in person. I would like to know what's up... I heard two things from a source who used to work there: DOS and Power issues. Not sure which it is.

I have a VPS with HD as well and havent been able to get on within the last hour!!! I've been with hostdime since they nearly opened. Ok my server is back up but hostdime.com site still down

Posted by JenniH, 05-23-2008, 09:16 AM
I think they are in Orlando Lewcy.

Posted by Lewcy, 05-23-2008, 09:22 AM
Sounds very ominous! It suggests the outage was a humans doing rather than an aog. Fingers crossed for you all that they come back online.

Down again.... grrrr

Posted by Net2Hosting, 05-23-2008, 09:31 AM
Yes, they are in orlando and i'm down also.

Posted by Corleone187, 05-23-2008, 09:32 AM
I know...I really need a new host

Posted by IceBlueHost, 05-23-2008, 09:35 AM
Unfortunately our servers are also hosted at the HostDime data center, so we're experiencing serious issues as well. I've been in touch with someone from the management and have been told it is a power issue in one of the data center segments. They are working on it and hope to have it resolved soon.

Posted by wearyone, 05-23-2008, 09:35 AM
The shutdown msg you got in your SSH session could very well be a power outage, very likely backup power system is set to power everything on backup for a period of time but after a certain amount of time if the backup battery is running low it will send a signal to your box to power it down gracefully. So this could be a power issue after all. That being said, my VPS is still down as well. If anyone gets any info please post an update. thanks

Posted by rjoe, 05-23-2008, 09:36 AM
SurpassHosting.com is down as well. The quality of their service has gotten progressively worse over the past year. Outtages are common-and always seem to happen either at the end or the first of the month. I've been with them four years, but it's time to go.

Posted by phizzalot, 05-23-2008, 09:37 AM
I used to live in orlando. Thats one of the main reasons I chose this host. Wish I was still there so I could go down to there office!!!! I will Have to switch VPS hosts after this. I can't deal with it anymore!!!

Posted by MBAA, 05-23-2008, 09:42 AM
I have been with host dime for more than 2 years .. Today something strange happening there .. I haev two dedicated servers and one reseller , all not working today for more than two hours , one server back to work before 5 minutes ,, and the others are still offline !!

Posted by IceBlueHost, 05-23-2008, 09:44 AM
There's several threads about this already, please read this one in the outages section: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=695310

I have a dedi server with HD which has been down for several long periods in the past few hours today too. Helpdesk is down. I can't reach them by phone ("all circuits are busy"). WTF is going on?

I'm going down there... I will twitter what they tell me... You can follow me at http://twitter.com/jasonbyrne

Posted by drmac, 05-23-2008, 09:58 AM
The fact that "all circuits are busy" leads me to believe that the problem may not be HostDime's, but rather something upstream with the lines going into their building.

Posted by eshutter, 05-23-2008, 09:59 AM
traceroutes I've been doing this morning also seem to be choking somewhere @ level3

Posted by drmac, 05-23-2008, 10:02 AM
Just dialed the fax number listed in InterNIC and I got the fax "squeal" so not all of their phone lines are down. Maybe their main line is connected via computer only, and thus the "all circuits are busy" message.

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 10:09 AM
Well, a power outage would not cause "sorry, the number you dialed has been disconnected or no longer in service" Unless this power outage is more wide spread?

Posted by Lewcy, 05-23-2008, 10:13 AM
Agreed, that could have caused everything to shut down. The question then is have they not got gens? If main power failed and backup bats had to shut everything down surely the gens would be turned on, unless they dont have any..... Do they run their own datacentre or are they based in someone elses?

Posted by HostDime, 05-23-2008, 10:13 AM
We are experiencing power issues in a segment of our datacenter, we have been working on it for the past hour. Everything should be resolved within 30 mins. We will be honoring our SLA and compensating for the issues. Once everything is back up we will be doing a report and what is being done to prevent this in the future. As many of you know these kind of issues are not something that happens often here- rest assured this incident is being taken seriously. We do not take any kind of downtime lightly.

Posted by Lewcy, 05-23-2008, 10:19 AM
What was happening the hour before that? Its was about 2 hours ago people started reporting problems

Posted by drmac, 05-23-2008, 10:19 AM
hwindows.com just came up but nothing yet for hostdime.com also, I now have access to my site thru FTP. Last edited by drmac; 05-23-2008 at 10:25 AM.

The questions for us is... when to start bailing critical sites out. We really could do with a clue here regarding outage, but we can't even communicate with them. Frustrating is not a sufficiently strong word. Nothing from Jason yet on is Twitter either.

I've always believed in hostdime having a good crew. It sounds like they will have things back to normal soon.

Posted by larryinfl, 05-23-2008, 10:26 AM
My co-located server is not available either at HD. No fun.

Posted by stilford, 05-23-2008, 10:30 AM
my vps is down. it came back up for a few but crashed again. Whatever is happening at HD, it is bad.

Posted by Capoeira, 05-23-2008, 10:30 AM
I have two dedicated servers and three vps accounts, My clients will gonna kill me. I'm still waiting. About a month ago hostdime have a similar problem. We are evaluating another vendor.

Posted by eshutter, 05-23-2008, 10:32 AM
HD just posted on the general board web hosting board and have confirmed it's a power issue in line with what Scarab's described above. Nothing more than a "we're on it" message.

Posted by IceBlueHost, 05-23-2008, 10:37 AM
We have 11 dedicated servers at their data center, so no, it's definitely not fun, and we have a lot of worried and annoyed customers as well. But I have been assured that they have all the staff working on it, and I'm sure that they are doing all they can, and will post a full report once al is up and running again.

Posted by phizzalot, 05-23-2008, 10:39 AM
Thanks for responding HD. I will be looking forward to uptime within the next 30 minutes. Very uncomforting not hearing your soothing music while I wait for help this morning. I think the Operator Message is what made me wonder what was going on?

Small update about 75% should be up, we have a good crew working on getting what is still not up, up.

Posted by larryinfl, 05-23-2008, 10:43 AM
I just tryed calling one of my suppliers in northern florida for something and i'm getting a message that the phone number is disconnected... which I know it is not. This may be a larger issue than just HD.

Posted by stilford, 05-23-2008, 10:50 AM
My VPS server is starting to respond to pings, although no web services yet. Guessing power was just restored and hopefully things will be online shortly.

Posted by JenniH, 05-23-2008, 10:52 AM
None of ours are up (3 different servers)... we must be in the 25% then.

I hope that HD will post a detailed explanation of what happened today. Getting wake up calls from clients is never fun, and calling them back to explain power issues gained the reply, "Well our office has power."

I've been with hostdime for almost 5 years now.. and the support and and downtime are just getting worse as of recent.. i've been down more this year than the previous years combined.. I've had 2 tickets in for the same issue (a customer put one in which I didn't know about) and got 2 different responses.. one couldn't find anything... the other asked my customer if it was ok to do a Kernel upgrade to fix the supposed problem. I think it might be time to look for a new host.... My dedicated server is still down.. has been since 6:47 AM according to my monitoring service...

Posted by SONY721, 05-23-2008, 11:45 AM
I have one reseller package with HD 1: And now is all down all the sites down 2: This is my third time that my sites are down the first 2 times not was for power issues ( inside problems ) 3: The Support is very good and fast answers in 10 to 30 minutes they no take more that 30 minutes to answer me something [ this is my case ] I know they try day by day to effort the best server uptime but some times i don't know you get little downtimes ( 30 minutes ) but today is power issue maybe the generator is broken or maybe is real power issue with outside of the data center. Just my 2 cents

Posted by jpmaster, 05-23-2008, 11:47 AM
hostdime.com in back online. However my VPS is still down. I've already started to receive calls from my customers... I have been with HD for three years now, and this is the second time I run into a problem like this with them. Phones still not working.

Is anyone experiencing a severe slow down in bandwidth? I am not getting any more than 10kb/s on downloads coming from my server... I am located in Oklahoma and have verified similar speeds from a friend in Seattle

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 12:17 PM
Yeah, the two threads were started almost the same time =)

Posted by stilford, 05-23-2008, 12:19 PM
verified bandwidth issues across all of HD servers... The data center seems to be limiting bandwidth to 10kb/s coming out of the center... I connected via a couple remote locations and achieved no more than 10 at each location simultaneously.

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 12:23 PM
I'm sure someone is at the helm easing the load back into the system. Can't expect hosting to be 100% after a hit like this. It's going to take some time to get back to normal.

Posted by zimmerru, 05-23-2008, 12:29 PM
Yep I agree. My server is not "working normally" either.

Those of you who are down, are you able to ping your machine? My VPS took about 10 minutes from the initial time I could ping before the web services were up and running.

Posted by zimmerru, 05-23-2008, 12:33 PM
No I can not ping my machine. I havn't been able to ping it for 5 hours now.

Posted by JenniH, 05-23-2008, 12:36 PM
No ping from here either.

Posted by jpmaster, 05-23-2008, 12:45 PM
No ping either. I just opened a ticket and this is the answer I've got: Hello, I apologize for the inconvenience. Earlier this morning our Datacenter experienced network issues related to the power in one of the segments of the DC. All of our NOC staff is working on this issue and we are in the final stages of getting everything back up and running as soon as possible. You can view the latest updates via the following Forum Thread: Can't post the link... need 5 posts... WTF? Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience. Regards, ---------- Usman Senior Analyst, Office HostDime.com Clients are starting to complain....

Posted by kastro662, 05-23-2008, 12:46 PM
Sorry for those of you who are still down. Our server (colo) has been back up for almost 3 hours now with no more downtime. So I guess they are maybe still working on certain parts of the datacenter and we just got lucky to be part that is up first. I understand downtime now and again and we haven't had much of any problems longer than a few minutes in the past year... so I can forgive even this major issue if it doesn't happen again for a while. My biggest concern, honestly, was that the phone system was down... just needed to hear from someone there. And wanted to make sure I didn't see people moving a bunch of servers out of the datacenter and putting chains on the headquarter doors. :-) So I went down to their (new and fancy) offices downtown and everything seems fine other than all the stress of employees wanting to get back online. Good luck all and fingers crossed that I didn't just jinx our server.

Posted by Capoeira, 05-23-2008, 12:57 PM
one VPS still doesn't work, our main dedicated server doesn't work also, We don't know what to say to our clients about their three hours of out of service

Posted by jpmaster, 05-23-2008, 01:07 PM
We are up again.... hopefully we won't go down again.

Posted by zimmerru, 05-23-2008, 01:38 PM
Going on 7 hours down.. Supposedly they are running on UPS and Generator power and all servers have power again... but that was 1.5 hours ago and mine is still down...

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 01:50 PM
You know, regardless of who your hosting provider is. The golden rule is not to keep all your eggs in one basket. We use 4 data centers over the globe and I have to admit that HostDime has provided great support. Spreading the clients over many centers is much easier to handle service calls when it's not all down at once. Interesting, when I was not able to access information I searched Google and found this forum right away! Back to work.. but I'm sticking around

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 01:53 PM
Sucks that this is happening for you, my post was not in reply to yours by the way. It was just in general as I stepped away for the moment

i have a question about the problems with HOSTDIME right now is 6 hours my sites down and im losing like $400 at this time 3:40 pm Friday and the Friday is not finish yet what can i do with that they can refund me my money that im losing today ? i can show screenshots for all the days in this month that i made between $200 to $500 for day what you think webmasters

Posted by Dawzz, 05-23-2008, 03:48 PM
Well you have a right to mad I guess, but then if my site made 500 a day I for one would have a fallback system in place.

Posted by Snerdey, 05-23-2008, 04:00 PM
Dam straight, having a site(s) that produces cash flow better have more than one DNS server. Money is no joke and to see the sales stop is not fun. The internet is not perfect and to depend on one host to provide 100% service for it? It's like shooting yourself in the foot. If your making that kind of cash daily then one would easily justify having more than one host for those projects. Hine side is 20 / 20 but maybe this won't get you again in the future if you take measures now to protect the sales.

Posted by HostDime, 05-23-2008, 04:04 PM
Thank you all for your patience during these issues, 90% of the servers are restored, if your server is still down please post your server ip on this thread http://forums.hostdime.com/showthread.php?t=7300&page=9 Rest assured all will be compensated and steps are already being done with engineers to ensure this doesn't happen again. I know a lot of you are frustrated and upset, you have every right to be and we are taking this very seriously

Posted by Lewcy, 05-23-2008, 04:55 PM
I cant quite belive this is still going on! I last posted 7 hours ago when they said it would be 30 minutes and everything would be back up. So still six and a half hours after that and there seems to be a considerable amount of people still without servers. This sounds like a lot more than a simple power outage. Something doesnt add up...... Out of interest does anyone know the number of servers host dime has in total?

Posted by HostDime, 05-23-2008, 04:58 PM
Hello, There is nothing else going on other then a lot of servers are fscking what is your server ip?

Posted by Lewcy, 05-23-2008, 05:03 PM
OK, as a client we dont have one. Nothing worse than waiting for fsck, good luck with everything.

Nobody's fault but your own unless you paid for a 100% uptime agreement and package with the provider. Regards,

These are extremely long fsck's... and an extraordinary large number of them.

All who are having a bit of a dig, How about you take a moment to think about what the guys working on the problem today have been doing before you make moany unneeded comments? In this situation we're all in the same boat, Hostdime have the same problem as we all do, our clients are down, their clients are down, everyone knows how it feels. The best thing to do right now is show some support to the guys on the ground working on the problems.

Posted by Corleone187, 05-23-2008, 07:00 PM
My server is up and WHM says FTP is up too but I can't seem to connect via FTP. Any idea?

Posted by Toby H, 05-23-2008, 07:08 PM
Hi Corleone, If this is a dedicated server try restarting ftp then trying again. It is also possible that due to the length of the outage the guys at hostdime are worried about high network traffic causing further issues and could be blocking FTP traffic, I'll have a look and see if I can FTP to any of our servers...I guess dropping them in a support ticket via http://desk.hostdime.com and seeing if they can help at all might be worth doing, although it might take a while to get a response!

Posted by Corleone187, 05-23-2008, 07:53 PM

It's been a *LONG* day... what's going on now?

Posted by dew, 05-23-2008, 10:47 PM
Our dedi seems to be down as well. After meeting the guys from Surpass / Hostdime I know they're working as hard as they can on the problem. But I still hope it's back up soon. Last edited by dew; 05-23-2008 at 10:56 PM.

I've got two colo'd and 1 dedicated offline, including an asterisk phone system. Am thinking of ordering some pizza and mt. dew and heading down to the NOC myself.... (kidding, that wouldn't do any good)

PATHETIC SERVICE!!!

Posted by KeyThing, 05-23-2008, 10:58 PM

Looks like I'm back full.... again... for now...

We have been down again for about 45 minutes. I called Mike (operations manager) on his cell phone. He was (understandably) really stressed out and frustrated... I tried to say my piece but he had obviously put up with hearing that from a ton of customers all day. I can sympathize with him... but it's really getting ridiculous. And this is a really key weekend for our traffic. :-( He said he had nothing new to tell me other than some issues reoccurred and that they have 100% of the tech staff in the datacenter working on it. No ETA.

Hostdime.com is down for me as well.

Posted by KeyThing, 05-23-2008, 11:13 PM
I think HD needs to get themselves an SMS notification system. I'm sure I am not alone in knowing that at least if I know *something*, I feel better... a quick SMS saying, "Yeah, we know, we're working on it" could go a long way. I use WebSitePulse's SMS notification system that alerts me when there are connectivity issues... yeah, it's gotten quite a workout today...

Posted by talmik, 05-23-2008, 11:22 PM
yeah this is really terrible, my sites have just come back up but at the moment all my databases are missing so my sites arent even working

Posted by kazhoster, 05-23-2008, 11:23 PM
Well, my site has just come back up about 5 mins ago. Hostdime site is still not showing though. Interesting thing, I went to anonymouse and tried to access hostime.com from there and here is what I got (see attachment). I cancelled it, of course but what is it? Any ideas?

Posted by KeyThing, 05-23-2008, 11:29 PM
My guess would be that anonymouse doesn't handle DNS failures well, and it freaks out their script, which then doesn't know what to do, so, you get apache saying "Uhm.. hell, I dunno.. here, download this?"

Hi. I am Andrew from Australia and I have 6 real estate websites hosted with HostDime which have all been down for 16 hours. I also have another 10 sites and several clients with them. Can anyone suggest a course of action or a means of contacting their admin/techs. Being down is bad enough and is affecting several thousand people directly on just one of my sites - but not having any idea when we'll be back up, is impossible to work with. Any advice on a contact point ( bearing in mind I'm in Australia ) would be greatly appreciated.

This is something that's not supposed to happen, but then again, everything is possible and we had experimented a long day and many got really frustrated. In the end I want to say THANK YOU HOSTDIME PEPOPLE for all the hard work you've been doing for the last 24 hours. I know how difficult and stressing it is to have tons of angry customers on your back. Manny, Paul, David, and the rest of the crew: THANK YOU ALL! GOD BLESS YOU! and hope you have a nice Memorial Weekend. You earned it! Thank you for putting your "cojones" on the line to demonstrate why you RULE!!!! Regards from the people @ sisyser.com

My sites are still down w/ their other company Surpass Hosting. Been with them over 5 years and this is the most downtime I've seen. I'm sure they're working hard but man my e-book on ClickBank is sold from a website on my reseller account so no sales for 24+ hours now.

Posted by HostDime, 05-24-2008, 06:21 PM
Everything is 100% back to normal now, there is 3-4 servers which are being restored as we speak. Once again thank you all for your support, patience and loyalty. We had engineers on site all day today analyzing the situation and exact measures are bing put in place to prevent this from happening again. SLA credits will also be given, it is the least we can do for the unforeseen issues but we will take full responsibility.

When HD first went "off the grid" on Friday, I hit some outside references - people who know some of the techs there - for information. During the ordeal, I was speaking with other NOC Admins from Orlando, keeping them up to date as much as I could. There was genuine empathy for what was going on within the walls of HostDime. Would it be possible to get some kind of a recap? What happened, what went wrong, what was done (in general), and what's in place to prevent this from happening again? I ask not only out of personal curiosity, but also information gained from this experience can benefit others as well as HostDime.

Posted by HostDime, 05-25-2008, 09:00 PM
It is not only an obligation but a duty for us to report a what happened, why it happened and what is being done so it never happens again. This will be posted on our forums and emailed to all effected clients. Yes we do care

hostdime.com/about/5232008/ for an update with all information.

Posted by KeyThing, 05-26-2008, 11:15 AM
Nicely done. My only suggestion is to go back and proofread it just a little. Last I checked, (and I could be wrong) there is no "Progressive Energy" power company in Orlando - There is, however, I "Progress Energy". ;-) I know, I know... minor detail... but it does make a difference to some people.
