Dedicated IP Vs Shared IP

Posted by MyNet-Tony, 07-12-2007, 03:47 PM
I have a VPS and my main account has its own IP that it can share with two IPs for customer nameservers. What is the best way to deal with Resellers? Give them their own dedicated IP and two IPs for nameservers or just make them share the original three?

I think give them own ip. And still share nameserver. It's beckouse you resseler can do some and ip can be filtered.

give resellers their own shared ip, If one of them gets attacked and overwelms the server you can just have the ip null routed so it doesnt affect the entire box. PLus you can track and monitor a few other things better. as well. Sharing nameserver ips is no problem most of the time.

So you can setup multiple nameservers off of the same IP? I wasn't sure of how to do this. Yeah my initial thought was give each reseller its own IP to share with their clients to prevent any suspect activities coming back on my IP.

You would want to set up the name servers with their own unique IP address. Making them share the same IP sort of defeats the purpose of having more than one name server. :-) As for the clients having their own, it's up to you. There would be benefits to your clients having their own such as that they could then assign an SSL certificate to that IP. However, consider the cost you'll have to cover if you do this as your business begins to grow. You may want to provide to your clients a shared SSL anyway. Just a thought.

ok but if i share nameservers - so to speak - can i setup multiple sets of nameservers off of two IPs?

Yes, you could... but if a reseller wants reverse DNS setup on those two IP addresses it could be a problem for other resellers. IMO, it's best to give resellers their own 2 IP addresses for name servers to avoid situations like this. Edit: Another alternative would be to setup anonymous name servers that your resellers can use, unless they absolutely insist on having their own. The anonymous name servers can be shared amongst anyone who wants to use it, without giving away any details of the primary hosting company. ... if that makes sense.

Giving resellers their own 2 ips also means their own site can run on a different IP to their clients, so if the client IP has to be null-routed the reseller site stays up. On a reseller account I would prefer that (but then I'd also prefer to be hosted on something better than a VPS...)
