Renaming a partition

Posted by ricky2007, 06-21-2007, 05:37 PM
Hello people of WHT! I've spent a while on google and the forums but couldnt find an answer to a question. Is it possible to change the name of a partition in linux? e.g. its currently called Disk /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 (/) But i would rather name is something normal like /dev/sda1 Is this possible with out losing any data? If so how can this be done? Many thanks for any help.

you are using lvm and yes it can be done (not in the way /dev/sdax),I'd rather not do that.try to read something more about volume manager and it's only about name convention.

The suggestion was that you can rename the volume, but not to call it /dev/sdax. The command you want is lvrename, and try "lvm help" for some details. Here's a link to help you get started, and it has a few links to LVM docs.
