MSSQL connector in PHP

I'm bringing a new webserver up in our office here. I installed PHP 5.2.1 with the MSSQL extension. I'm not able to connect to any SQL servers, however. It will fail at mssql_connect(). (MSSQL is not yet installed on the server so I can't yet test its connection to localhost.) I have a suspicion that it might be firewall-related, but if I create ODBC connections to those same SQL servers it works just fine with all of the odbc_*() functions. Are the ODBC and php_mssql connections being made on different ports?

why would you use mssql funcitons on php5 ? you have PDO functions for this
