As it states on the front page of our web site we are in fact having an issue with the RAID array on one of our web servers, where it seems block group tables have become lost/corrupted. We are currently in the process of recovering the data we can from the array and will then be restoring the data from the backup.

HAHAHAHAHA - what's happened to the RAID?

I've had Sun v440's with the built in raid controller have a drive fail and when we went to swap the drive the entire machine died. (These are hot-swappable) Turns out two the other was on its last leg, luckily we made backups, which steadfast did also. Raid is great, however it doesn't protect you from corrupted data it simply mirrors/copies/stripes that corrupt data across the array. I have a shared account on web4 (webjunkies.biz) and prior to this week it had a 125+ day uptime (149 if I remember correctly) This is pretty darn reliable.

As was said, RAID doesn't protect you from everything and here the issue is data corruption. The RAID verified all the drives as being functional, and all the partitions were fine, except for the one with the web data.

Yep, two drives and you're done. I had an IBM ESS/Shark do this to me more than once. Turned out Quantumn had a bad batch of drives. Just wanted to say that all my sites are up except one. I didn't see it mentioned here, but I will say that only web4 was affected and everything else is humming away nicely. That includes other web, mysql, and mail servers.
