Virpus down yet again, too soon it seems.

Posted by Robato, 06-10-2007, 11:16 PM
Virpus, can you throw us a bone here? What is the deal? Seems you are going down every week now. Is this going to be the norm from here on out? And just to be fair. Anyone else down or is it just me? I cant even reach virpus' page. Last edited by Robato; 06-10-2007 at 11:21 PM.

Yeh, all down. They don't answer their tickets either.

Posted by Mekhu, 06-10-2007, 11:23 PM
Definitely network wide I think. We're down again as well.

Posted by Mekhu, 06-10-2007, 11:26 PM
Not to go off topic but if anyone has any VPS recommendations for hosting a website that uses 500-600GB total bw a month, send me a link via pm! No personal offers. RECOMMENDATIONS

VPS up Virpus site down

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-10-2007, 11:49 PM
Hello, One of our nodes is currently down and we are working to fix the issue. It is not a network issue.

Posted by odsdc, 06-11-2007, 12:48 AM
VN-Ken, do you have an ETA?

Posted by Mekhu, 06-11-2007, 12:54 AM
You know what bugs me most about your company Ken? No proactive emailing. It's BS when a client needs to see their site as down and then come to a hosting forum for answers. Send a damn email already. It takes minutes to tell your clients you're working on the issue...

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 12:55 AM
Hello, I am unable to provide a solid ETA right now as our data center seems to be busy right now. However I would expect service to be restored within 30 minutes

Posted by odsdc, 06-11-2007, 12:56 AM
Well it appears that WHT is the only source of support. I've had tickets open for days now with no response.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 12:57 AM
We would however our site is on a VPS node. I understand that communication is important. Within this month, our own sites will have their own server so that this will be possible when such cases arise.

Posted by Mekhu, 06-11-2007, 01:10 AM
Good to hear!

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 01:23 AM
The server was rebooted at last resort at 12:11 AM. The server is now booting back up.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 01:55 AM
Server has booted back up but we're still facing an issue. We are still troubleshooting.

Posted by RyanD, 06-11-2007, 02:28 AM
might want to look at hosting your site off-site so when everything tanks you can still communicate with your customers

Posted by roshu74, 06-11-2007, 02:41 AM
Ken - it has been over 48 hours now and we are all in dark.. What is going on? Roshan

Posted by roshu74, 06-11-2007, 02:45 AM
Ken, I have have my entire team get very frustrated with repeated frequent downtimes and other permission issues that keep coming up for no reason. Roshan

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 02:55 AM
Roshan/All users: A KVM/IP device was connected the server in concern at around 1:30 AM. Since then we have been troubleshooting. I do apologize for the inconvenience caused and would like to establish that this is not of the usual for us nor does the recent issues meet up to our corporate goals. As stated in our last e-mail, when we make the changes stated in that e-mail we will have more control of what goes on and have our own dedicated staff available when needed, as our data center tends to stay busy since they are pretty large. Will provide an update shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 03:00 AM
We are now able to remotely connect to the server after finding that there was an issue with the iptables. We are in the process of repairing the fstab file which after this is fixed, we should be good to go.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 03:46 AM
The file has been repaired. Server has been rebooted and is now doing a fsck. Because of the large array, it will take at least 60-90 minutes to complete the fsck. Will keep you informed.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 04:48 AM
The FSCK process is now 40% complete, so this looks like it will go on beyond 90 minutes.

Posted by nocturnix123, 06-11-2007, 05:12 AM
So two major outages in two weeks, is it unheard of to give a refund for a month in the hosting industrz these days or what? Maybe I should be shopping around for a new VPS too.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 05:17 AM
Our SLA states that we will refund you. Once our help desk is back up we can arrange a compensation for the downtime experienced.

Posted by odsdc, 06-11-2007, 06:22 AM
Coming up 3 hours later since you said 60-90 mins. Can you please give us an update.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 07:03 AM
FSCK is complete however the problem with the iptables has came back up. We're looking at this now.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 07:55 AM
Node is back up and iptables have been corrected.

Posted by Robato, 06-11-2007, 08:39 AM
Ken, What email was this? I never received an email stating any changes that will take place. I would like to know what you are doing to prevent major outages like this. Im not asking for a refund, the price I pay for your service is pretty low. HOWEVER, I spend about $200 a day in advertisement and traffic to go to my sites and when my site is down 12 hours in a 24 hour period, twice in 2 weeks....I get a little worried and want to know what you are doing to prevent such recurring outages. I know this sounds like Im complaining and being really negative (which doesnt help anyone), but Im losing money here. I want to stick around with you guys, you seem nice and on the ball when things go down....but its starting to become an issue that you go down this often. (Ive never experienced such frequent downtimes with any other host I have used/using) If the email explains this issue and what you are doing to resolve it, please post that email here, because if I didnt get an email, Im sure other customers didnt either. I just want to know whats going on and what to expect, because I cant afford to spend so much money on advertising sites hosted on a server that will be going down this often.(and this long)

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 08:43 AM
Could you kindly shoot an e-mail to general@virpusnetworks.net? I will be able to reply to your e-mail with some information for you. I cannot repost it here however.

Reply sent. Let me know if you have any additional questions that you may have and I will be happy to answer them for you.

Find a new VPS mate. We're moving RIGHT when things come back online. This keeps happening, no communication and no reason for change it seems (on their end). We keep getting excuse after excuse only to go through this **** again in another week or two. You owe it to yourself and your team to find a more reliable company.

Posted by Mekhu, 06-11-2007, 12:24 PM
... what's the deal Kenny boy? I notice your website is backup but mine isn't.... any news...

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-11-2007, 12:41 PM
Please open a ticket so we can look into your instance. Everything is online from what I can see. Thank you.

Posted by nocturnix123, 06-11-2007, 06:49 PM
my site is still down too, going on 12+ hours downtime now. i am on vacation in germany and have limited access, please look into picsoup.com thanks.

Posted by KnownHost, 06-11-2007, 07:12 PM
I hope you opened a ticket with Virpus as WHT isn't the best of places to get immediate support. My 2 cents. -Jay

Posted by kingjj, 06-14-2007, 08:01 PM
It seems that Virpus is down again! My VPS is down, myvirpus.com is down (although I know they were moving this sometime today) and I can't access virpus.com. Pinging and checking from uptime websites give me the same result: request timed out & failed. Tracerts get stuck at the COLO4Dallas main router. Getting really unhappy here...

Posted by drumman24, 06-14-2007, 09:17 PM
I cant seem to access their website. 9:20- its loading, slower than 28k though. Last edited by drumman24; 06-14-2007 at 09:20 PM.

This is becoming REAL nonsense now. This has been the absolute WORST host I have been with when it comes to reliability.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-14-2007, 10:49 PM
The issue should be resolved within the next 10 minutes. The customer in concern is to be terminated once it is back up. This is a duplicate issue of what took place previously.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-14-2007, 11:45 PM
All customers should be up except those on Core2. We're currently making sure it is safe to put it back online.

Posted by Robato, 06-15-2007, 07:09 AM
Ken, isn't there some kinda preventative measure you guys can put in place so that one customer cant annihilate your ENTIRE network? although, I think Im moving now...Ive never experienced so many down times with any host and Ive been doing this business for 11 years now.

Posted by kingjj, 06-15-2007, 08:52 AM
Ken: How come the customer in question wasn't terminated the first time it happened? Even if it was not their fault surely some measures should have been put in place to avoid it happening again. I'm happy to support you through most downtime, but duplicate incidents such as this are just not acceptable. I will however be staying with you for now as I believe you really do try your best Ken, I hope I won't be disappointed. Last edited by kingjj; 06-15-2007 at 08:54 AM. Reason: Correct grammer.

We have set our servers at 10 Mb/s and our uplink at 100mb/s however our switch does not seem to be handling this correctly. The switch is to be swapped next month for something that has been tested, though the current switch we have is considered top-notch. This would be the security measure to avoid such issues in the future.

Posted by VN-Ken, 06-15-2007, 11:00 AM
The first time this happened we had cleaned up the customers VPS and performed security tasks. We also put a QoS limit of just 2 Mb/s (which did not have any effect it seems) We will be working up new internal policies of how to act to different situations (even the smallest of things) In the future if this was to happen, on the first go, the customer will be canceled just for the sake of future damage the customer may bring to our company. Thank you for your support and patience with us during these times. If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me directly at kenneth.odem@virpusnetworks.net and we can go from there, as I want any customer who has a concern that has not been addressed to be able to communicate with me so we can clear up any concerns. Thanks again.

Posted by Robato, 06-16-2007, 10:54 AM
Im getting 404 errors on the client support, client home and support ticket pages. Before the network went down, I had someone working on a ticket and now that things are back up, the whole support area are 404s for me. How am I supposed to check on the status of my tickets? How do I post new tickets? Did you guys change the url of the support ticket system or just take it down altogether? Or is it just me?

Posted by odsdc, 07-01-2007, 02:39 AM
looks as though it's down again. I think it's time for a new host.

Posted by odsdc, 07-01-2007, 05:03 AM
Ok, enough is enough. This experience with Virpus has just been a nightmare. Servers constantly down and no one bothers to answer when I email management/sales.

Posted by kingjj, 07-01-2007, 06:18 AM
Dito here, was wandering if I was the only one. Really not cool. Has been down for last 3 hours at least. Similar symptoms to last time though, perhaps another customer eating up the pipe? Can partially load virpus.com and bits of my site, not often though and very very slowly.

Posted by Robato, 07-01-2007, 06:42 AM
yeah its like clockwork. Their advertisement slogan should be, "every 2 weeks, we give your server a paid (your bill) vacation for a day or two!!!"

Posted by odsdc, 07-01-2007, 06:45 AM
I just wish there was some communication.

Posted by Robato, 07-01-2007, 06:55 AM
well when they go down, their site is down too. So I doubt your emails are getting through. You can try calling them, but thats not going to change that they are ALWAYS down for 1 or 2 days every two weeks. Last edited by Robato; 07-01-2007 at 07:04 AM.

seems virpus.com is back

Posted by kingjj, 07-01-2007, 08:27 AM
I was right! Not to toot my own horn but it was indeed the same as those other times. Infact the same customer from the other two times. Their account somehow got reactivated and que another clog in the pipe. Email recieved from Virpus 5 minutes ago:

Posted by Robato, 07-01-2007, 09:02 AM
man I really hate that user. I wish Virpus would get rid of that guy for good.

Posted by edu4vision, 07-01-2007, 01:43 PM
arghhh... I'm still down now. Anybody knows what going on? Virpus send an email saying everything is back ok a couple of hours ago, but it's not.

Posted by Httpeasyhost, 07-01-2007, 08:14 PM
