DiscountASP.net Down

Posted by lizon, 06-21-2007, 03:22 PM
Does anyone else use discountasp.net? Did you notice an outage? I couldnt even get to their site for about 10 minutes or so.

Looks like they are being affected by a massive DOS attack. http://forums.asp.net/t/1124832.aspx http://community.discountasp.net/def...px?f=6&m=18216

Do you? Because your profile says "Phil - CrystalTech" which makes me scratch my head and go, "Hmm, wtf?" But I do that a lot.

I have sites at multiple hosts depending on my customers needs. I currently have two sites at dasp.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! By all means then, pardon my suspicions of schaudenfraud. I am ashamed.

Apparently the year is 1980. Am I wrong In thinking that in this day and age a 1gb attack can easily be managed if the provider has a good relationship with the uplink’s noc? “hey bro can you stick this router on your end of our pipe till this ddos is finished? In fact, just keep it there..” Fudge man didn’t foonet have a t1 and avoid all ddos’s because they filtered at the isp? Official discountasp status page (not hosting on the discountasp network): http://216.128.30.225/index.html Last edited by realized; 06-23-2007 at 12:01 AM.

No. That's a fairly large attack. Ah, if it only it was that easy... And then they got raided and all their equipment was seized? But that's neither here nor there - the point is: no. Might want to do a little research into how the internet works

Sounds like someone doesn't understand what a DDoS attack...

The ddos attack had the force of more than 667 T1 lines. A similar magnitude attack took down Yahoo some years ago. So yea, it was a HUGE attack. Many of the security experts we consulted with had never seen an attack this big. We even talked to some large respected dedicated hosting providers to divert some of the incoming traffic and they all refused because they couldn't handle it. Who would ever think that a mid-sized host would be attacked with the same force used to knock out a Yahoo.com. We didn't, until now. So now we are prepared for it. What we are facing is a new world of ddos attack folks. The attacks are getting more forceful by the day and they are moving down the food chain. So for the other hosts reading this, you better get prepared too.

I wonder if DASP's Google AdWords campaign had anything to do with this?

Posted by dasp, 06-25-2007, 01:31 AM
I have no idea. Do you know something about the ddos attack that we don't?

Posted by Ultima VPS, 06-25-2007, 08:17 AM
I just know there were a lot of very, very unhappy campers due to the defamation taking place in Google AdWords - just thought there might have been a link.

UltimaHost: I have to say, I find the response kinda wierd. I hope you are not withholding any information about this ddos attack. We will be letting the investigators know of this thread.

Once again neither discountasp.com, dicountasp.net nor my own domain are findable. Are the nameservers being attacked again? I know there was an attack late last week, but this is not good. Bad for everybody's business.

Posted by dasp, 06-26-2007, 07:53 PM
No there is no attack. One of our DNS servers is down. We are working on determining the cause.

Posted by lizon, 06-27-2007, 02:14 PM
Again I cant get to my sites or to discountasp's site.

Posted by dasp, 06-27-2007, 02:32 PM
What's the URL so we can check and others can check too. We checked the name servers at a bunch of locations around the internet and it looks okay. But we've seen some emails from people about not being able to resolve domains. It's definitely not everyone. Let us know the URLs so we can check and if others can check too, that would be great.

Posted by lizon, 06-27-2007, 02:38 PM
Well I guess if no one else experienced it I will leave it at that, I even tried tracerts from dnsstuff.com and network-tools.com to your domain and couldnt resolve...

Posted by dasp, 06-27-2007, 02:44 PM
Wierd. If you want us to check your domains that you host with us then let us know the domains. If you don't want to post them, you can Private Message me. We have received a few tickets from some customers that can't resolve their domain but we've checked from other locations and they are okay. Traffic to our site/network looks okay too. We're trying to figure out what's going on. Some hiccup someplace out there.

Posted by dasp, 06-28-2007, 01:25 PM
Just following up. Never did receive further details from lizon so I'm going to assume that the domains are resolving now. If you are still having domain resolution issues or encounter any other issues, please send in a support ticket directly to DiscountASP.NET. Please note, we normally do not do support via the hosting forums but since this thread was live discussing the recent DDoS attack we've been monitoring it. Cheers.

Sorry I did send a ticket in to the support address and received a response about the 10 - 15 minute outage I noticed: "We were experiencing an outage one of our name servers which is causing connection problems for some users. That has been resolved. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you, Cedric " All has been well since, thanks for the info.
