varhosting.net - my site is down :(

Posted by GIGANET, 03-06-2005, 08:31 PM
We run many windows and linux machines at the planet, but decided to move our primary "serverdivision.com" site on to another web hosting company to ensure if we ever have a problem on our server our sites still work and run and customers can contact us. After using them for 1 day - my site is DOWN - and no luck. I talked to their support guy and he said SUPER HIGH LOAD. They said they didn't really know why. Not happy. They said its the first time ever - I think i will choose some professional companies to host my business site. Their server has very slow pings compared to mine - this is very bad if customers try to test our connectivity as they think their site will be hosted on this server which it will not.

well, i have only just started using them for a few hours, and its down. - dnsreport says nameservers failed. support is only giving me one word answers to my questions saying "i'm sorry about that" instead of assuring me that it will be solved. not sure if they have untrained staff, but very bad decision - i will go with site5 or hostnexus in a few days I think.

You should host your site on your own servers.

Doesn't sound good. You may want to switch your nameservers back to your own server if their uptime is that bad and do some research into someone new.

Well to change the nameservers now will take a few hours - still not happy - less than 4 hours and its been down for a few of that. ns1.serverdivision.com. [63.246.154.30] [TTL=172800] [US] ns2.serverdivision.com. [63.246.154.31] [TTL=172800] [US] A timeout occurred getting the NS records from your nameservers! None of your nameservers responded fast enough. They are probably down or unreachable. I can't continue since your nameservers aren't responding. If you have a Watchguard Firebox, it's due to a bug in their DNS Proxy, which must be disabled. .

STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE - MY SITE HAS BEEN DOWN FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS NOW!!! They said they need to reboot - It doesn't take 4 hours to reboot!!!! STAY CLEAR OF VARHOSTING.NET!!!! - You can use dnsreport.com if you don't believe me.

My site is down too. Recently I got moved to a new server because of intermittent DNS issues, and now this. Seems pretty severe. Must say though that their support has always been good, though they are pretty quiet at the moment...

support good???? what's the point of having 24 hour support when they don't answer your questions. me: - what is wrong with the server? them: - we are rebooting it me: 4 hours later - why is it not up? them: -we are still rebooting the server me: no - i said why isn't it up - whats the problem? them: - datacentre is looking me: you didn't answer my questions took me 50 minutes to get a decent answer. i hope they are a professional company.

I'd say they hav more tickets than they can possibly atttend to at the moment. Looks like they might have a pretty serious DNS issue there... Like I said, up to now (IE this current problem) support has been excellent. This much downtime is going to see a great many fleeing customers...

well i've changed my DNS back to my servers - hopefully working in a few hours. I'm going to talk with the big boys like site5.com in a few hours and see if they can help me out....

Me too. Just signed up for their Supercharged special. Booting varhosting. Can't afford downtime like this... Happy hosting adventures...

Hi GIGANET: The server your account is on is running a fsck after the server went down. The datacenter is currently working on the issue and will update us (and we will update you in turn). I do apologize about this! Roj

GIGANET: Manual fsck has been completed by the datacenter - your site should be up now. I apologize for this! Please submit a ticket to the Billing department for a refund for the downtime you faced. Thanks! Regards, Roj

Unfortunately I cancelled with you guys as the support team provided very poor quality ansers. That was nearly 15 hours downtime - I will continue provided you move my account to "the planet", I can't stand the slowness of sagonet. Thanks - please email me.

I'm sorry - our reports show closer to 5 our 6 hours (which I'll have to admit is pretty poort). However, manual fscks can take that long sometimes and are usually unavoidable by most providers. At the same time, they are usually rare in occurance as well. Please contact me at niyogi@varhosting.net so we can put you on another server and give you a discount towards a better overall plan. Thanks GIGANET. Roj

Giganet, I think instead of moving your whole site over to another provider, you should instead create a seperate "support" site, and move that to the other provider. Of course, make sure to let your customers know about it beforehand so they know where to contact you or read any announcements made during any major downtime. This will show that you can trust your network/servers to host your main site, but also show that you're taking precautions incase the worst does happen.
