Redbus Interhouse Down (Netcetera, Supanames, etc)?

Posted by dazemx, 03-01-2005, 06:49 AM
Hi, I am currently having problems trying to get to supanames.co.uk I have several websites hosted on several of their servers and cannot get to any of them. I cannot get to their website to contact them, so if anyone has any heads-up or has any means of contact other than email could you please reply ASAP. Sorry in advance if this is possibly in the wrong forum!

I have found these numbers: 24 hour fault and error reporting voicemail line UK 0706 990 37 25 24 hour fax UK 0870 125 76 78 Link

Posted by dazemx, 03-01-2005, 07:20 AM
Thanks for that. I have just tried ringing both numbers and the phone one is an automated message telling me that this number is not currently connected to anywhere (or something). The fax dails to nothing.

I hope you are not in big trouble. Whois.sc says that the website is not active. Link Last edited by Tom Sawyer; 03-01-2005 at 07:43 AM.

Just to let you know this is in the wrong forum In the webhosting section there is a link called "host down?"

Posted by dazemx, 03-01-2005, 07:51 AM
Thanks very much. That number works and goes through to some sort of voice messaging system where I have just left a message with them. Thanks very much for your help, Ill see how this goes.

How long have they been down for? I'm getting no contact to or from them.

Posted by dazemx, 03-01-2005, 08:13 AM
Well they we're up this morning, about 9am GMT. I think they went offline somewhere between 10-10.30am UK GMT time. Our team here are fearing the worst and will contact Nominet this afternoon to transfer all our domains to a new host if there is no news from supanames.

You are welcome, dazemx.

Supanames are a fairly big host so I wouldn't panic too much. However if the downtime continues with no contact then find yourself someone new who will take care of you and your sites.

supernames down anybody got the same all my sites gone hellllp-

Posted by bumfilter, 03-01-2005, 08:40 AM
I use them for email only, problem is I'm waiting on a few important emails, so this is not helping. Hopefully they will be back up soon. I'm assuming it's a SupaNames problem only however as other Interhouse hosts are still going?

I don't know if it is related but at 10:10am GMT a problem occurred in redbus which has affected routing to a number of ISP's and is on going. We have been told there was a power outage, but are getting relayed information. We get the info from our service provider who gets the info from the telecoms company who gets the info from redbus. Regards

Netcetera (inetc.net) is definitely down: and they host at Redhouse. As we are seeing reports of Supanames down, who also have some boxes there... it's looking like a connectivity issue of some sort at the data center. Does anyone have any further info? Ah, this could be very good news then! Thanks very much for that, if their DNS servers our in Redbus then that would expain why nothing resolves. Thanks again. Daze

A trecert on their nameserver ip's does appear to start timing out at this location so I imagine that is causing the current problem. Regards

Posted by peoples10, 03-01-2005, 09:03 AM
Lets hope this is the problem

Posted by jgriff64, 03-01-2005, 09:04 AM
Apparently there has been a power outage at redbus which has caused problems to routing equipment supplying some ISP's. There is no time for a fix as of yet. Regards

Good old Redbus! >> There is no time for a fix as of yet << Did they not even have a ballpark figure of any sort? I've not been able to get through to them at all. Update: I finally got through... and you're right... no ETA or anything at all forthcoming. Last edited by JenniH; 03-01-2005 at 09:10 AM.

Yes... this is wearing a little thin, to say the least. None of our sites are back, but the main host site is. You'd have thought that given we are now up to 4 hours downtime, they could find someone to spare 30 seconds to put a status announcement on their site, with an ETA. If I was Supnames, Netcetera and the rest, I'd be joining the chap at The Register in looking for alternatives.

All mine & client sites seem to be back up and running. This was not good as one of my client sites were planning to go live today and we were in the middle of uploading all files when it went down Thanks for the update guys

Posted by bumfilter, 03-01-2005, 10:29 AM
SupaNames back up, my emails are coming through now.

Posted by JenniH, 03-01-2005, 10:48 AM
We are still down. I just spoke to Redbus again.... they are completely full of 'damage limitation PR'. All I got was how hard they are working to recover, a £2million investment they have made, and so on. Unfortunately, no hint of an ETA or anything useful or tangible.

Posted by JenniH, 03-01-2005, 11:44 AM
Our Netcetera sites seem to be back: 5 hours 10 minutes outage. Incidentally, when I called Redbus I urged them strongly to create a status reference on their main page, so that suffering customers could see what was going on, and when to expect recovery. Disappointingly, nothing has appeared.

Posted by 1round, 03-01-2005, 12:05 PM
Tho we basically know what went wrong here is a reply from Supanames

FFS, a power outage and god knows how many sites are down for 3+ hours. Are we still in the middle ages here ? For the amount of money Redbus make surely they should have some sort of contingency in place for this sort of thing. (IT IS THE 2ND TIME IT'S HAPPENED IN ONE YEAR FFS ). It can't be that hard to put some sort of back up in to avoid this sort of problem. My hosts (ghoulnet) are there - I got nothing from them (no surprise there) but finally got hold of someone at Redbus who said 'the best thing to do is to come down here and re-boot your server yourself!!!!!!! ') Recommends please for a replacement reseller that isn't hosted at Redbus PLEASE!!!!!!!

Here's the latest from The Register: Redbus power failure - companies form group to voice concerns and apparently this is all Redbus have had to say Regards Keith.

Posted by codek, 03-01-2005, 06:29 PM
so does anyone know what the actual current status of this is? Are most people back up now? I've read varying reports, but none make it clear if power is actually fully restored, altho they do say that for those for which it is they are having surge/fuse issues.

Posted by philofleeds, 03-01-2005, 07:17 PM
All my sites are back up. We were only down for c.4 hours. This came in from my host...... "One of our technicians has just reported in after speaking to a Redbus staff member. They were testing the generators today, during the a piece of metal off a filter fell across the power rails and caused a massive surge followed by a power failure. The fire alarms were activated and the building evacuated. We presume it was activated by the Very Early Warning smoke detectors from the flash of the short circuit. This is what caused the long delay in getting power restored. We will provide the official answer as soon as we recieve it. But this seems to be an accurate "portrayal" of what happened. Access to the cabinets was heavily restricted due to everyone being down there replacing blown fuses.

Here's the official email that was sent out: That was what annoyed me the most not knowing what was going on, nice to hear that they are setting up alternative server status sites but in my books should have already been in place.

Posted by codek, 03-02-2005, 05:02 AM
hehe i expect most isp's dont have alternative server status pages, until an event like this happens! So is there any information about whether redbus will be paying for all this fried kit? Will they be paying compensation for downtime too? What level is that usually paid at? In fact, as i understand it they'll have to pay out on lack of power supply, and lack of connectivity for those people who they provide both?
