Mega-Hosting Disappeared?

Posted by Petander, 01-17-2005, 04:12 AM
Hello and greetings from Finland. I´m not sure for how long Mega-Hosting has been down... four days at least.Anyway, I bought a six month package two months ago with PayPal and I´ve been building a homepage for my music work. I´ve been a pro songwriter for the last 20 years or so, got a solo thing happening now. And now, the whole "Mega-Hosting" has vanished, no emails, nothing. Just when I got my email-life re-organized with the new addys... dammit. Not to mention all the music uploaded. Even their homepages and boards have gone. What now? How do I go on with petander.com (that´s my real surname)? Can I use it with another host in case the whole "Mega-Hosting" was just another fraud? Thank you.

Whats the url? mega-hosting.com comes up but with a language other than english

Posted by Petander, 01-17-2005, 06:33 PM
Thanks for the reply. The url is mega-hosting.info , there´s nothing. This other one is a dutch company. Well, how do I do on with my domain? I can not re-register it because I´ve already done it... with mega-hosting. Perhaps you should post your problem with the domain in the related forum to get the attention of the members who have more experience in dealing with such a problem with your domain. I think you need to see who registered it, mega-hosting.info would just be a reseller for a company such as enom, when you find that info you might be able to get something worked about between both of you.

Hmmm... I´ll do that, thank you - what might that forum be? BTW: While posting this I noticed that they´re back up now. About a week down... kinda a lot, huh? At least I can contact them now.

It would be the Domain Name Discussions forum

Posted by Petander, 01-18-2005, 05:42 PM
Allright, thank you very much. I do need a backup somehow.

You will most likely be best off finding a new host, and go to your Registrar to change the nameserver of record to the new host's nameserver. It's not that big of a deal.

If you are looking for a good host that's been around for awhile and not oversold -- try f5hosting.com I've used them for about 4 years. Tell Michael that the Big Kahuna sent you.

Thanks again, I´ll check it out.

You can get the owner's contact infomation at if you do a whois on MHSERVER5.BIZ. That was the nameserver for mega-hosting.info. It says the registrant organization that owns that domain is Mega Hosting. The mega-hosting.info domain expires today and the MHserver5.biz expires in like a week, so I have a feeling they went under. They might be willing to give you a refund if you give him a call. The owner is in the UK.

mega-host.info works here....

Posted by Petander, 02-02-2005, 04:47 AM
Well, mega-host.info may work but mega-hosting.info sure hasn´t worked for a while. A bunch of emails stuck.. dang. I´m done. Working this out with ABNHosting now, they actually contacted me - probably after reading this thread I guess. Looks just fine, let´s see what they can come up with in terms of retrieving my domain names and email addys... and no pre-payments. Thanks again, everyone. Ahh... a PayPal complaint! LOL!

Mega-Hosting.info is going down the drain. I've spoken with the owner, and he said he was selling the company, but nobody gave him an offer for it, so I'm pretty sure he's closing up shop. I left them just to be safe. He gave me a list of his clients emails, and I contacted most of them offering them a new home if they needed it. Just thought I'd shed some light on the situation, so everybody knows what's going on, and why they've had like 50% uptime. I'm pretty sure nobody is even watching the server anymore (give support a try, you won't get an answer, even after weeks). They're probably just waiting for the server to get cancelled. Yeah, their "Mega" webpage seems to be up at the moment but of course it´s not possible to log in to change the nameservers. No reply for a "lost password" either. Everything else considering hosting is still down. ABN (above ) has done a great job by manually retrieving my stuff, thank you very much, only the nameserver thing keeps bugging me now. XP Service Pack 3 better include an assortment of sedatives and painkillers.

Now I mailed www.enom.com and asked them to unlock it and change the nameservers, they are selling M-H. Waiting for the reply.

Posted by IMeanWebHosting, 02-06-2005, 07:45 PM
Yeah, if anyone needs help transfering hosting or getting their domain unlocked, let me know. You'll notice if you click www.mega-hosting.info now that they've gone bye bye It's confusing, because I offered to buy his clients from him, and he just said "no, they'll live without hosting" like he doesn't even care... Horrible business if you ask me. I treat every customer as if they're my own family, and think that all hosting should be that way. Stupid kids trying to run their own business.

Not to be a jerk, but I would expect it if I had paid $20 for 6 months of web hosting service.

Posted by IMeanWebHosting, 02-09-2005, 09:48 AM
True, I had a reseller with them though. Luckily for me, I went dedicated with liquidweb about a month ago

Posted by Petander, 02-11-2005, 05:01 AM
Yeah, I know I have this personality problem that makes me to trust people. It´s all my bad. Wonder what the correct price would be... it´not the friggin money, anyway my business has suffered enough for now and I´ve had it with people asking about the missing pages all the time while I´m on the road. It´s still locked . Better forget about it and set up a server of my own. Gotta love this, my ex manager from Germany had my name reserved for a year in 2001, we ended up in court for that. Better change my name I guess. I´ve lost enough because of all this "cheap" crap, when the pages don´t work, people don´t come back. Sorry for the vent. Telephone and snail mail, here I come.

Posted by astutiumRob, 02-11-2005, 06:22 AM
Depends on what country, what plan specs you need, and what the business is worth. Whilst cheap does often = crap, expenive doesnt necessarily mean any better. It depends on who you deal with, if theyre a reseller of a reseller of a reseller. What network youre on, what hardware etc First work out what you want to acheive, what service you need etc, work from that. Do some digging on the host - even a traceroute to their system(s) will show which DC and transit providers, use arin/ripe to lookup their IP to see whos the netblock owner etc Hosting should be like any other critical service for your business - pick the one thats right for you, not the one with the lowest headline price or fanciest template webpage.

There are also a few "cheaper" companies that offer value, they're just far spread. Mega-hosting.info had all of the domains locked, and yadda yadda which put people like petander in quite a bind. Now their servers are completely gone, and petander is left with a 404 error on a domain that he can't get unlocked (enom's support is horridly slow). I understand that companies sometimes need to "go bust", but at least do it in a civilized way. I'm sure quite a few people on here would've been more than happy to buy mega-hostings clients, which would've meant less hassle for the clients, and money in the old owners pocket. So it's dumb that he would just shut it down and tell everyone to deal with it.

Posted by MyFocal, 02-11-2005, 10:33 AM
This isnt the first time, Endore.com did it too, just a few months ago. Thats just ridiculous that any hosting company would be so rude and ridiculous to just leave people helpless and screwed. Im sure if you look up 'Endore' on WHT you will see many people got screwed over on that one, maybe a lot more than were here.

Hang around long enough you'll notice a few hosts go every day. Some bow out gracefully. Some sell of the client-base as a last ditch effort to get something for their work. Lots just vanish never to be seen again.

Posted by IMeanWebHosting, 02-11-2005, 03:25 PM
Seems like all of them would sell the client-base... Not sure why anyone in the world would work hard like that, and then just drop it...

I just want to jump in here and say that this host is not realted at all in any way shape or form to us. MegaHosters.com. Just to clarify for future potential customers who may see this post and then happen upon our site and think the two are related. Thanks, Clint

Posted by IMeanWebHosting, 02-16-2005, 09:27 AM
Yeah, this only applies to mega-hosting.info and mega-hosting.biz. Megahosters.com is still as top notch as always

Posted by Petander, 02-22-2005, 08:36 AM
Up and running. When Enom finally replied they guided me to TOS who in turn replied and unlocked the nameservers right away. Anyway, ABN got my stuff saved long time ago so this is an easy re-start (well, countless emails disappeared of course). The biggest problem is the "grapevine", people don´t bother coming back because they "know" that the domain is down. I´m dealing with busy music business people. And this is not the first time being let down, been here before with both cheap and expensive Hosts. I used to run my wife´s pottery / handcraft pages some years ago... more money, more troubles. A big host grew too big. Anyway: Now back to the net business, thanks everyone - especially Lorne at ABN .

You're very welcome Petander. Glad I could be of assistance.

ICANN Registrar: ENOM, INC. edit: Sorry I just read the first page of posts when putting up this info from whois.sc. I see that you already got it straightened out.
