Dinix down again?

Posted by Toe, 10-08-2004, 11:53 PM
Second time in barely over a week.

Posted by angeredmoth, 10-08-2004, 11:54 PM
Yep... they're down yet again!

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:05 AM
Confirmed... am online with several clients throughout the U.S., and I can't connect from here either. I'll give them a ring in a few minutes; I wanted to give them a little time to sort things out before contributing to the telephone deluge. As soon as I know anything I will let ya'll know. Bailey

Posted by angeredmoth, 10-09-2004, 12:07 AM
Thanks Bailey. I've officially given up on their Phone support ans I always seem to get the answering machine. Whatever happened to the 99.999% uptime guarantee! LOL

Posted by matriarchy, 10-09-2004, 12:07 AM
Sigh. Now what.

Posted by basil_brush, 10-09-2004, 12:08 AM
Yep starting to regret moving from my $5 host to dinix. Dinix has been down more times over the last 2 months than the entire 4 years at my previous cheapo host.

Posted by angeredmoth, 10-09-2004, 12:09 AM
They were very good before. But now it seems that they can't keep their network up. Hopefully this is the last one for a while.

Posted by matriarchy, 10-09-2004, 12:09 AM
Useless phone system and no off-system help or announcement capacity at all, even after this has happened a couple of times.

Posted by JamieW, 10-09-2004, 12:14 AM
Yep, all my domains with them are down too, and of course can't even bring up Dinix.com itself. My pop monitor hasn't been able to access an acct for about 35-40 minutes.. So it's been down since 11:35 Eastern, at least. They really need a backup network that actually kicks in when the main one is down. This new datacenter was suppose to have the most reliable network connection around, I thought. But at least I'm rather sure they're working quickly on it, and we should be back before long. Unlike other providers I've had in the past that can actually take months before getting you back online.

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:23 AM
I've registered http://www.dinix911.com and will have it running within about a half-hour (thank you, dyndns.org). I don't have much to tell you there but at least there will be somewhere off-network for Dinix clients to gather if there are issues. I'm in touch with one of the off-duty techs but as of yet we don't have an update. I'll let you know as soon as I know anything! Bailey

Posted by handreach, 10-09-2004, 12:28 AM
Damn. It's right when my website is the busiest (tomorrow, my association is going to have a big event). With my requirement on space and bandwidth, I could have spent far less in other hosts. I only used 20% space of my dinix plan, but I feel confortable because of its fame and stability. Now, this is soooo disappointing. I might switch to bluewho in future, which is the only one that I haven't seen any big disaster so far.

Posted by ericabiz, 10-09-2004, 12:33 AM
Our VPS with Dinix is down as well. I'm really glad we will finally be moving the one site on it back to our home network next week.

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:36 AM
dyndns.org reports that dinix911.com should be active after :15 past the hour. If it's not, I might throw something out the window, just so I feel better. Bailey

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:41 AM
Well I can't say much, I've a box at ServerMatrix and they were down 25 minutes this week. I've got broadband at the office, and Charter's been down a total of 1.5 hours this week, the last outage was 70 minutes last night. Sooooo... *shrug* Remember to put in for your Network SLA credits, with Billing, when they come back up. Bailey

Posted by Toe, 10-09-2004, 12:42 AM
Just crossed an hour since I noticed my site was down...

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:47 AM
OK just talked to Terry. The Juniper is down, which is the main router which controls where traffic goes. E-Deltacom is working on it along with Dinix techs. Thanks for your patience guys, they are aware of it and working on it as fast as possible. Bailey

Posted by planetjoin, 10-09-2004, 12:47 AM
Hello : Someone know what going on with DINIX ? I have one server with them.. Is the second time in 10 days down.. The weird is that his own site dinix.com not work neither (using other network or something that) to post any update of the issue. They MUST inform us thru any method whats happens Anyone have any update of the problem now? Regards Fabian

Posted by WreckRman2, 10-09-2004, 12:51 AM
/me is down too.

Posted by ericabiz, 10-09-2004, 12:51 AM
What? They guarantee 100% uptime and don't even have redundant routers? Good grief.

Posted by c0nstant1ne, 10-09-2004, 12:52 AM
Yeah, some updates would be great... I'm trying to put the finishing touches on a clinets site that goes live at midnight tomorrow :/

Posted by planetjoin, 10-09-2004, 12:53 AM
Hello again... I´ve just also told with dinix support by phone and the dinix people is working on the problem (as bithost(NET) said I hope that they fix it quick and NOT happen again. Just a suggestion to DINIX : Put online in another network some "emergency" site with updates when some problem like that is happening I go to see a film on my dvd meanwhile Bye... Fabian

Posted by matriarchy, 10-09-2004, 12:53 AM
I appreciate the news, Bailey, although I am very distrubed by the outage pattern lately. But it took them an hour for them to tell you something. Please tell them that we should not have to go to WHT to find out what is going on. They MUST do a better job of communicating. Dinix911.com might help... but not if *you* have to wait an hour for news. Get them organized.

Posted by Altheon, 10-09-2004, 12:59 AM
Is anyone else here on Dinix down? I thought that I was having local connectivity issues but sites like DNS report can't even see my server? It's been over an hour and I can't even get to their main site to find their number so I can give them a call.

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 12:59 AM
tbrant, I'm workin' on it Erica, they do not guarantee 100% uptime, and the SLA gives you cash credit if they don't meet their uptime guarantee. Put in for it. The update is the same as before, please be sure to read through the thread(s) before posting... I'm not going to post the same info over and over again. Terry has my number here at the office and said he would call me as he has updates. That way I am not interrupting him with the phone -- he can focus on what he's doing. Bailey

Threads merged

Posted by Toe, 10-09-2004, 01:09 AM
Indeed, apparently they ponied up for redundant networks, but forgot to get the redundant routers along with it.

Posted by drhonk, 10-09-2004, 01:29 AM
Looks like its up now ..

Posted by Toe, 10-09-2004, 01:30 AM
Up and running here, too. A hair under 2 hours of downtime...

Posted by JamieW, 10-09-2004, 01:36 AM
Yes, appears to be back to normal again. From about 11:35 pm Eastern to 1:30 am. Just under 2 hours, yep.

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 01:37 AM
DINIX911 is also up and running. It's a very un-fancy WordPress installation right now, but it'll do in a pinch... I'll work on getting it jazzed up once the dust settles. I know that they called in off-duty techs to go in; the off-duty guys were there probably 20 minutes when the network came back up. It's been up for me here, for about 5 minutes now. Please be sure to put in for downtime credits. That's what they're there for... you ordered a service, and Dinix is going to honor that SLA. As far as the Juniper issue, Dinix's chief engineers are on-site and fully aware of what's going on. Whatever lessons can be learned from this, and improvements put into place, will be. It truly could not have happened at a better time in that the people in a position to make changes, are the ones involved first-hand. (It being a Friday night is helpful too...) Of course we all would have preferred it not happen at all. Bailey

Posted by JamieW, 10-09-2004, 02:23 AM
Yeah that's 5% per 30 minutes, and the two together are 3 hours, so that's 30% for this month so far. Though as per the SLA: So technically the time they pay you for doesn't start until you report a ticket for it, and goes until the service is back up. But since you could not get to Dinix.com either, you can't report that issue until it's back up, which is a net time of zero. No outage! 100% uptime! Assumedly though Dinix won't hold that against folks.

Posted by MadCool, 10-09-2004, 02:31 AM
Funny thing is that I was ordering a server and was going back and forth testing out the different server pricing when it went down! I thought I crashed it somehow lol. Then thought it was something with my browser.. I can't even seem to post in the dinix forum anymore.. I keep getting: Sorry! The administrator has specified that users can only post one message every 30 seconds.

Posted by basil_brush, 10-09-2004, 02:34 AM
What am I suspose to do? Dinix has been down for me for about 2 weeks now, so can't submit a ticket! Not my website but dinix.com

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 03:12 AM
basil_brush, that would be a third-party network issue, most likely. I have several servers located through out the U.S. and all are able to get to Dinix's network as well as receive traffic from Dinix. Could you please run a traceroute to dinix.com and send that along with your home/PC's IP address, and your server's IP address, to me at dcwebhost2go@yahoo.com ??? I will forward that data to our techs for them to try to run a reverse trace, as well as notify Internap that routing appears to be down for you. Cheers, Bailey

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-09-2004, 03:17 AM
Jamie, no, that won't be held against anyone. It wasn't handled that way for the last outage either. But you do need to put in for a credit with Billing. Please open a ticket at http://www.dinix.com/myaccount/ detailing the Network times/SLA you are requesting a credit for. Tonight's outage was 1:45 (on my watch, but I don't know what networking is saying, it'll be their final number that is used), so at 5% per half-hour, tonight would be about 17.5% by my calculation... or $6.12 on a VPS 100. Every little bit counts. Bailey

well, i guess this is what i get for sleeping one nite! glad i missed it btw if you email supportteamATdinix.com youll get a very fast response. i always do. i dont know why ppl really need to do the phone thing.

Posted by JamieW, 10-11-2004, 01:55 AM
Yep, I did that, and also brought up the previous one (which I wasn't going to bother about until this second, longer one occured), and did receive credit for the total of three hours (30%), and Dinix did respond quiite quickly about it, without any hassels. So it's all good. I just hope this will be the last of such outages for anytime soon.

Posted by JamieW, 10-11-2004, 02:03 AM
Well yes, normally. But if their network is entirely down then emailing them won't reach them until the outage is over, which doesn't help people that want to know why it is down and when it'll be back up. So since there are no emails going in nor out, nor can you even reach the helpdesk ticket system, the only other choices are: waiting; reading about it here; or calling.

Posted by bithost(NET), 10-11-2004, 03:16 PM
At the time of these two outages, that was correct. It is not the case any longer though, due to customer suggestions/requests, Dinix does want to stay in touch.... So there is an off-network site up now, http://www.dinix911.com. Please add it to your bookmarks. Thanks!!!!! Bailey

Waiting for info here http://dinix911.com/

Posted by coight, 11-30-2004, 05:21 AM
I would say it's a DoS well it looks like it ~2500ms pings when it hits their network.

Posted by WreckRman2, 11-30-2004, 05:23 AM
BTW, I'm watching and logging my tracerts to prove it was down. Last time it went down I didn't know you have to request the refund per their SLA within 48hrs or something so I missed out on a $20-25 refund. I let the first two times slide by me but this DNS crap has been a problem on and off for a week now.

My hunch is that they are under some sort of DDoS attack. We have a servers there, and our monitoring server has been throwing errors intermittantly for the past hour. In the past 30 minutes, they have been down more than they've been up.

Posted by marengo, 11-30-2004, 05:29 AM
Yes. They are up now

Posted by marengo, 11-30-2004, 05:33 AM
Wanted to add: November 25-27 I noticed many timeout errors and asked Dinix about that. They said that they are currently experiencing a denial of service attack, which is causing some DNS lookups to fail/timeout.

Posted by Christine B., 11-30-2004, 06:50 AM
It was a planned maintenance outage - according to posting at the Dinix forum. I guess Dinix doesn't think it's necessary to inform the customers. Nice going!!!!

Posted by WreckRman2, 11-30-2004, 06:54 AM
Planned my butt or it wouldn't in and out so much... a planned outage means if goes out and stays out until plugged back in.

Posted by WreckRman2, 11-30-2004, 06:57 AM
Hmm... posted yesterday at 10AM on DINIX forums. I guess they think we should check their forums daily for planned outage notices. Very unprofessional. Dear Valued Customer: This is notification that e^deltacom will be performing maintenance on Tuesday November 30th, 2004 from 2 am - 5 am EST. e^deltacom is committed to providing the highest possible quality of service and therefore, we proactively notify our customers so that you may have the opportunity to manage your business appropriately.
