Fluidhosting down?

Posted by blade67, 10-25-2004, 02:13 PM
Hello, Wondering if anyone else is experiencing connection issues with fluidhosting or their sites on it. I've had phemonenal service from them, so it's probably something out of their hands. Thanks.

Posted by WebMate, 10-25-2004, 02:14 PM
How long have you been experiencing this?

Posted by blade67, 10-25-2004, 02:16 PM
About past 20 minutes.

Posted by OtherMDesign, 10-25-2004, 02:22 PM
I concur. Fluidhosting and all hosted sites are indeed down. Ouch. I just signed up for 6 months of service.

Posted by blade67, 10-25-2004, 02:24 PM
they're a great host and I'm sure they are working on it right now. It's probably a ddos attack or something. i've been with them for 2 years and i wouldn't think of switching.

Posted by mmhelp, 10-25-2004, 02:35 PM
I'm also a fluidhost customer and my site is down.

Posted by livenomadic, 10-25-2004, 02:37 PM
Yep, it is down for me too. This is the second time my site has been down for more than 30 minutes in the last 2 months... but the first time fluidhosting.com was up and I could get some status reports from the tech team via the chat room. Now I cannot get anything.... I've almost been with them for a year and my contract is almost up. I actaully discovered the problem when I tried to login and renew/upgrade my plan for 2 more years. It's been offline for what, an hour now? If that? Possibly a DDoS attack or some such - I certainly wouldn't worry too much at this point.

Posted by doctorow, 10-25-2004, 02:41 PM
No need to switch. They are currently facing a DDoS attack on one of their hardware switches. Internap is helping them to solve the problem. The same reason why your site was down earlier as well. The question is: What can someone, even Fluidhosting, do against a DDoS attack?

Posted by BiggysDad, 10-25-2004, 02:44 PM
Still down. Their main site is down too - that usually doesn't happen - I hope they let us know what is going on soon....

Just fyi, there is indeed a Dos attack on FH servers, if you are customer, you can see the update on their forum...if you are able to access it

Posted by nvphone, 10-25-2004, 03:13 PM
Yep, they are under heavy attack! Some of my sites are up and some down. Some poor bored nut with nothing to do.. Going on 2 years and I will just let the guys do what they have to do. The forum is up: http://forum.fluidhosting.com/ "At the present moment, we are facing a Denial of Service attack towards our servers, and network. We are presently working to mitigate the attack at our network edge. As well as with the assistance of Internap to block offending IP addresses at their network routers."

We are aware of the problem and we are working to bring everything back up as soon as possible. No ETA at this moment, unfortunately. All customers should visit forums.fluidhosting.com for updates.

everything seems to be working now!

Posted by BiggysDad, 10-25-2004, 03:30 PM
Not up for me yet...

Posted by JTY, 10-25-2004, 03:36 PM
Some people are having sites load fine, and others aren't. We're working to get this resolved.

Posted by gentlewhisper, 10-25-2004, 04:20 PM
Urgh, my site is down too... 2 hours and still counting! I wonder how long the attack will last, maybe 1 day? Or 1 week? Too bad I got a contract till next may too, else I may consider switching too, FH was good until now.... Will consider this host next time: deru.net If they can host mirrordot.org they must be very very good!

Posted by JTY, 10-25-2004, 04:21 PM
We're working on firewalling the issue. Please visit our forums at http://forum.fluidhosting.com/ for updates.

Anyway does anyone know how to make the DNS "round robin"?

Posted by NS-Icon, 10-25-2004, 04:24 PM
Most companies get hit by DDOS, only a couple of weeks ago our payment gateway WorldPay.com was hit very heavily. During the hit as with any service various aspects where intermittent, five days later the service seems to have resumed back to itself. At times like this I think the customers must have a little patience as this is a situation which can affect any sized business. Let’s hope the matter is resolved soon.

Yes - spend an absolute fortune on hosting.

Posted by cord, 10-25-2004, 04:29 PM
Unfortunately a DDoS is like a hit and run thing. It can happen to any host and there isnt much that can be done to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Posted by OtherMDesign, 10-25-2004, 04:46 PM
Dude, you need to think clearly about this. FH got attacked, it can happen to anyone. What you would be doing is equivalent to leaving a 3-story 8-bedroom mansion due to a temporary roach problem, and moving into a ranch with leaks and a foundation problem. Just wait it out. FH is one of the most reliable hosts out there and has great support. Who would you switch to anyway?? Some $9/mo host that gives you 5GB space and 50GB bandwidth? Ha!

Some people in Europe are posting that they can see my sites on fluidhosting which is interesting. I can ping it from here: http://www.dataphone.se/~astilbe/inetcheck/ and from here it stalls out: http://www.dnsstuff.com/ It hits the wall at 0.so-7-0-0.XR2.BOS4.ALTER.NET

Posted by cord, 10-25-2004, 04:53 PM
Maybe it has something to do with the filtering they are doing? There is no use stressing to much at this point. I am sure fluid will let everyone know as soon as they can.

Posted by NS-Addict, 10-25-2004, 04:55 PM
Im trying to go to fluid hosting site and no luck, whats actully going on?

Posted by daphne, 10-25-2004, 04:57 PM
Agreed. There's not much we can do but wait.

my site has been up for a while but now it's down again...

Read this thread.

DoS attacks are not always easy to defend against and it may take more time to fully recover from it. FH know their job, and posting messages like "my site is up....oh is down again.....oh can you access FH" will be just waste of time in my opinion.

Posted by WEBAIR, 10-25-2004, 05:48 PM
down from here as well...old thread though no? Last edited by WEBAIR; 10-25-2004 at 05:51 PM.

Posted by poolking, 10-25-2004, 06:26 PM
Not a very constructive answer is it?

Posted by cord, 10-25-2004, 07:48 PM
I figured I would get a word in that my site is working fine now.

Connectivity has been resumed. Most websites should be up and running again. However, we still have one IP null routed until we put in a dedicated firewall box. The firewall is being configured as we speak. We will keep all customers updated on the firewall progress and report/resolution on this incidence. All customers will be compesated for the downtime in accordance to our SLA. My sincerest apology for the downtime and all inconveniences/losses caused by this. Please contact support[at]fluidhosting.com should you have any further questions/concerns. Last edited by gina_; 11-01-2004 at 01:11 PM.

Nicely handled Dave! (As expected actually from a host with Fluidhosting's reputation.)

Posted by FHDave, 10-26-2004, 12:09 AM
The last IP (the target IP) has been re-routed again. Our firewall is now filtering all traffic, and it has done a good job for the last 1-2 hours. Thank you for everybody's patience, understanding, and even support during this troublesome time. We are looking forward to keep improving ourselves. For customers that was disspointed by the extended downtime (especially the customers on the shared hosting IP), we offer our sincerest apology. Do keep in mind that over the last 22 months, our network uptime has been better than 99.99%. Over the last 12 months, Alertra has reported a network uptime of 99.999% with a four minutes downtime (router reset) in the last 4 minutes. We will keep improving ourselves, and will keep deliver top notch reliability to all customers. All customers will receive an update later. Have a great evening all!

=) Any chance that the firewall can be taken out by those hackers too? Or did they just give up? =)

Posted by FHDave, 10-26-2004, 02:36 AM
The firewall would be transparent to anybody since it won't be shown on traceroutes. So I am pretty sure it's safe. The attackers are not giving up yet. We are still adding rules to the firewall. But the firewall is handling it very well, so I am not to worry about it.

Posted by FHDave, 10-26-2004, 02:42 AM
I will assure you that it's not very typical. In fact, it's the first prolonged network downtime we have since in the last 22 months. However, if you would like to move your websites away, I can understand that too. Just contact me off-board. I won't hold the contract against you over this

Posted by OtherMDesign, 10-26-2004, 03:37 AM
Heck no, Dave. As far as I'm concerned, I'm with one of the best hosts around Attacks happen. No biggie.

Posted by wheimeng, 10-26-2004, 04:29 AM
Well, great to know that things are under control

Posted by cord, 10-26-2004, 10:20 AM
I would just like to give a posetive impression of how the whole situation was handled. There were no excuses, lies, misleading statements, cover-ups, etc... I have seen many hosts that have taken a much lower road when problems have occured, but there is nothing that will give you more peace of mind than knowing that when staff 1 says that staff 2 is on his way to the data ceneter, they actually mean it. The updates were informative and every step of the way we knew what was going on. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Posted by gentlewhisper, 10-26-2004, 07:46 PM
Well.. FH is still one of the most reliable hosts around =)
