Fresh install or upgrade Plesk?

Posted by Joep654, 05-04-2017, 07:39 AM
Hi all! I ordered a new server at a webhoster. They installed Plesk 12.5 and upgraded it to Plesk 17 due to "We have to template drive provisioning for stability and efficiency.". Could I face any security problems of less performance due to this install method? Regards, Joep

Upgrading to latest version is most of the time recommended to fix some security issue or adding new features. What seems to be the issue here?

I do not use Plesk but I am assuming you mean they upgraded your old Plesk 12 .5 version to a newer version. While this is recommended there are a few things here that needs to be considered and I am hoping your provider did consider all of this. The first being compatibility and ensuring that your setup does not break due to this upgrade, often times upgrading a control panel will also upgrade a lot of system software and services. If it does break stuff, was the upgrade necessary, did the previous version reach it's EOL?

No issues, we were using Plesk 12.5 on live servers and updated to 17 without issues, this was on Windows servers tho.

On the new server they installed Plesk 12.5 and then upgraded it to Plesk 17. They did not a fresh clean install of Plesk 17. Does this have an effect on security and/or persormance?

It does not. I dont think anyone do a fresh install on every panel update

That is not what I meant :-) It is a NEW server. Without Plesk. Instead of installing Plesk 17 they install Plesk 12.5 and inmediately upgrade it to Plesk 17...

I understand what they said was their reasoning, but in the end, your new server is running Plesk 17 and shouldn't be degraded in any fashion.

No, no issues in stabilty or performance due to this method. This is a perfectly acceptable way to upgrade to Onyx. The only few security or other problems/concerns unless you are migrating servers. If migrating then the potential concerns that I am aware of are discussed in the Plesk Migrator tutorials... ---- The upgrade is not necessary from 12.5 - 17..err... Onyx (Plesk ditched the version numbers and will start using version names). But it's certainly recommended because of all the extended functionality and cloud solutions in Onyx. https://www.plesk.com/lifecycle-policy OP, Congrats on the new server and upgrade! Hope all goes well, but it sounds like you're in good hands. May we ask, is this server managed?

Actually I don't think it matters on security or performance unless you are migrating , this might cause some problems. Whether you start with 12.5 then upgrade to 17 or just 17 directly it will all boil down to your system using the same version 17.
